Help Luciana Continue Her Fight Against Leukaemia

Hello friends, family, and everyone else who has found their way to Luciana’s story.

Luciana is only 7 years old, and she is fighting leukaemia.

Luciana is the granddaughter of Maestra Luci and Agusto, known and loved by many who have spent time with the Mai Niti family in the Peruvian Amazon.

Luciana is from Pucallpa, in the Peruvian Amazon, and has been diagnosed with acute myeloblastic leukaemia.

For the past fifteen months, Luciana has had to remain far from home while receiving intensive treatment in Lima. During this time, she has undergone both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with her family beside her throughout this incredibly difficult journey.

Sadly, despite everything she has endured, Luciana’s condition is worsening.

The chemotherapy available to her in Peru is not only attacking the cancer, but is also causing significant damage to her healthy cells. Her doctors in Peru have therefore recommended that the family seek a more targeted and specialised treatment.

The specialised treatment Luciana now needs is not available in Latin America. Her doctors have therefore recommended that she travel abroad for treatment, with Rome, Italy, identified as the most accessible option for her, where children with her condition have been successfully treated. Her family hopes to take her there as soon as they can raise the necessary funds.

The treatment alone is expected to cost approximately US$20,000, an amount her family simply cannot afford on their own.

And getting Luciana to Rome is only the beginning.

In addition to the treatment itself, her family will need to cover international flights, accommodation and living expenses while in Italy, transportation, medicines and medical examinations, and the many unexpected costs that come with caring for a seriously ill child thousands of kilometres from home.

We are creating this fundraiser because we want to give Luciana every possible chance to receive the treatment her doctors have recommended.

How your donation will help

We are raising US$40,000 to help cover:

* Luciana’s specialised treatment in Rome
* flights from Peru to Italy for Luciana and the family member(s) accompanying her
* accommodation and living expenses during her treatment
* medicines, examinations and other medical costs
* transportation and other essential expenses associated with her care

Luciana belongs to a family from the Peruvian Amazon who are deeply loved by their community. They have already spent more than a year fighting alongside her through chemotherapy and radiotherapy in Lima. Now they need help to take the next step.

Because GoFundMe does not currently allow funds to be withdrawn directly to a Peruvian bank account, Emily and Asli, who live in Peru and are friends of the Mai Niti family, are organising this fundraiser with the support of many other friends of Mai Niti. Emily will receive the donations, and 100% of the funds raised will be transferred to Luciana’s family to support her treatment and associated expenses. We will keep records of the transfers and share updates about how the funds are being used and about Luciana’s journey whenever appropriate.

Every donation matters. Even if you cannot contribute financially, sharing Luciana’s story can help it reach someone who can.

Another way to support Luciana and her family

Some of you who have visited Mai Niti may already know the beautiful Shipibo tapestries that Maestra Luci offers to guests. She has also been selling these pieces to help raise money for her granddaughter’s treatment.

For those who would like to support the family by purchasing Shipibo art, pieces are also available online through Sacred Threads of Amaru:

All proceeds from the online sale of these Shipibo pieces will go to Luciana’s family to support her treatment and the expenses surrounding it.

However, the cost of the specialised treatment Luciana now needs, together with the cost of taking her to Italy and supporting her there, is far beyond what the family can raise through tapestry sales alone.

That is why we are asking our wider community for help.

If you are able to donate, no amount is too small. If you would rather support the family by purchasing a piece of Shipibo art, you can do that too. And if neither is possible, simply sharing Luciana’s story can make an enormous difference.

Please help us give Luciana and her family the opportunity to continue her treatment.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for supporting Luciana. ❤️

Estamos recaudando US$40.000 para ayudar a cubrir:
