Updated Campaign Story
In Loving Memory of Celeste
In late February, our beloved Celeste discovered a painful lump in her left breast. Without medical aid or financial means, she turned to the public healthcare system for help — but after months of waiting, delays, and lost records, her condition worsened drastically.
Despite her persistence, Celeste faced:
Long waiting periods at overcrowded hospitals
A month-long delay just to get a scan
A referral to another hospital due to lack of proper facilities
A lost biopsy file that delayed diagnosis even further
By the time she was finally seen, the lump had grown to the size of a melon, spreading toward her shoulder, ulcerated, infected, and bleeding. She endured constant pain and was unable to work.
After months of uncertainty, Celeste was finally diagnosed with advanced Stage 4 sarcoma breast cancer. By then, the cancer had already spread to her lungs, and she developed sepsis, which was not properly treated. Doctors could only offer a palliative “toilet mastectomy” — a salvage surgery meant to manage, not cure, the uncontrollable tumor.
Through all of this, Celeste showed extraordinary strength, courage, and grace.
On Monday, 1 September, at 3:00am (South African time), Celeste passed away. She was taken from us far too soon, and the loss has left a deep void in the lives of everyone who loved her.
