Help Three Gazan High School Students Continue Their Education.
My name is Abdullah, and I am a medical student from Gaza. I survived the ongoing war and was able to continue my education in North Carolina. I know firsthand the weight of a textbook in one hand and the uncertainty of war in the other. I am only here today because of the power of education and the people who believed in my potential when everything else was falling apart.
But while I sit in a classroom today, my younger brother Ismail and his two best friends, Mahmoud and Abood, are sitting in the ruins of theirs.
Abood (right), Mahmoud (left), and Ismail (middle) are three high school students in Gaza fighting to hold on to one thing the war hasn’t taken from them yet: their education. These three students are best friends and have been classmates for over 7 years, growing up and studying side by side through every stage of their schooling. These students are in Tawjihi, the most critical academic year of their lives.
Due to the ongoing war, all schools in Gaza have been destroyed or shut down. Like thousands of others, these students have lost their homes, stability, and access to formal education. Despite everything, they refuse to give up.
With no functioning schools, the only way for them to continue studying is through independent teachers who offer lessons in extremely difficult conditions. These teachers are one of the last remaining ways students can prepare for their final exams, but their lessons cost money, and the students’ families have lost all sources of income due to displacement and destruction.
