Help 280 kinderen aan het behouden van hun school

In januari reisde ik samen met mijn vriendin naar Gambia. Tijdens onze reis kwamen we in contact met Jainaba, de bevlogen en warme directrice van de Fanna Loum Memorial Primary School in Farato, aan de westkust. Het is een kleine, toegewijde school die onderwijs biedt aan kinderen van 3 tot 12 jaar. Van kleuteronderwijs (nursery) tot en met groep 6 (primary). Meer dan 280 kinderen krijgen er les in Engels, wiskunde, wetenschap en sociale/milieustudies. De omstandigheden zijn zwaar: er is geen elektriciteit en geen stromend water.
Onze betrokkenheid begon toen we besloten het nichtje van een vriend te sponsoren, zodat zij naar deze school kon. Wat begon als een klein gebaar groeide uit tot een blijvend contact. Met hulp van familie en vrienden hebben we inmiddels al €1.200 opgehaald. Daarmee zijn o.a. lesboeken aangeschaft, is de school officieel geregistreerd bij het Ministerie van Onderwijs en Justitie, en is er een bankrekening geopend voor veilige opslag van donaties. Ook is een begin gemaakt met de aanleg van een waterinstallatie voor de school.
Maar nu is er een dringend probleem.
De school staat op gehuurde grond. De eigenaar heeft aangegeven dat hij het stuk land wil verkopen en geen verlenging van de huur toestaat. Zonder actie zal de school haar locatie kwijtraken en kunnen ruim 280 kinderen niet meer naar school.
Daarom vragen we jouw hulp.
Met €10.000 kan de school het stuk grond aankopen en blijven bestaan.
Mocht het streefbedrag onverhoopt niet gehaald worden, dan wordt het geld gebruikt om een alternatief stuk grond te leasen.

Help Give Fanna Loum School a Secure Future
In January, my girlfriend and I traveled to The Gambia. During our stay, we met Jainaba. The warm and passionate headteacher of the Fanna Loum Memorial School in Farato, located in the West Coast Region. It’s a small but dedicated school that serves children aged 3 to 12, offering both nursery and primary education. Over 280 students attend classes in English, math, science and social/environmental studies, all without electricity or running water.
Our connection began when we decided to sponsor the niece of a friend so she could attend the school. What started as a single act of support became an ongoing bond. With help from friends and family, we’ve already raised €1,200. That amount allowed the school to buy essential textbooks, register officially with the Ministry of Education and Justice, and open a bank account for safe handling of donations. It also funded the start of a water installation.
But now the school faces a critical challenge.
The land the school is built on is rented. The landlord has decided to sell and will not renew the lease. Without urgent help, the school will lose its location and 280+ children will lose access to education.
That’s why we’re asking for your support.
€10,000 will allow the school to purchase the land and continue its mission.
If the goal isn't reached, all donations will be used to lease alternative land so the school can relocate and remain open.
