For three years I lived and worked in Qatar, where the number of abandoned and suffering street cats/dogs is overwhelming. Walking past them and doing nothing simply wasn’t an option to me.
One by one, I began picking them up from roadsides, building sites, empty land and my place of work. Many were extremely sick, starving and malnourished or badly injured. Some had clearly experienced alot of cruelty; others had never known a safe touch in their lives.
Over time, more than 60 cats were brought into safety. I managed to home many over the years I was there however leaving abruptly and unexpectedly meant I still had many without homes as they were in my care still up until the day I had to leave.
A large number have already been rehomed. But 25 are still waiting for their chance, and today they rely entirely on me.
Each cat I rescued I made sure every one of them received what they would need for a real future: veterinary treatment, vaccinations, microchips, neutering, and the paperwork required for adoption or travel, although as you can imagine for 6O+ cats this is far from affordable however the majority of it I have managed to cover on my own.
The 25 I had left now live at a farm shelter where they are protected and cared for.
But protection is temporary, and it costs over £500 every month to keep them all fed and sheltered, a shelter that is already drowning in their own debt from the amount of strays that gets dumped daily on the streets and in need of urgent care. On top of the shelter costs, I am carrying more than £2,000 in debt from the medical and legal preparations that make them adoptable.
I have funded this alone since May 2021. I’m now at the point where I cannot continue without help sadly. I'm not someone to ask for help, I find it very uncomfortable , however I am at the point where I have to or these cats will end up back on the street as I am really struggling to keep up with the shelter costs.
The goal is not lifelong shelter care.
The goal is homes for them to be settled forever.
I have already personally flown two cats to the UK, where their chances of finding families are far greater. Each journey costs around £500 per cat, covering flights, crates and compliance.
If you want to help, there are three incredible ways to change their future:
Adopt – Give one of these animals the permanent love and security they have never known.
Sponsor – Help cover shelter, food, medical debt, and travel.
Foster – Provide temporary care so they can leave the facility and be matched with adopters.
Every contribution, large or small, directly improves their odds of a real life beyond rescue.
When I picked them up from the streets, I promised them they were safe, id still like to try to fulfill this for each of them without them ever having to return to the streets, although the sad reality is if I can not keep up with the costs to shelter them that is unfortunately what will happen.
