Sprite Update (18 Year Old Cat Living in a Bush for Two Years)
Once trapped we rushed Sprite straight to the vet. She was in such poor condition that she had to spend three days there. Seeing her up close was heartbreaking. Her body was covered in mats which must have made walking incredibly uncomfortable. She was very weak, emaciated, and had clearly struggled to find food over the past two years. She was also filthy and infested with fleas which must have made her feel even worse.
Despite everything she remained calm once caught and allowed the vets to examine her. She was so well behaved that she even let them shave her while she was awake. It must have been such a relief to get rid of those painful mats.
The vets ran blood tests which showed that aside from being she was borderline anemic and had slightly abnormal thyroid levels. She was also severely dehydrated. She was placed on IV fluids but because this could worsen her anemia they monitored her blood closely. While she did become slightly more anemic it was not dangerously so. We will need to repeat her thyroid tests in a few weeks to see if proper care improves her condition.
When she was admitted the vets did a fast scan that revealed that her heart was slightly abnorma . The next day a vet who was good with scans was in so he did a more thorough scan of her heart. The changes to her heart were age related and thankfully she was not in heart failure. The vets also noted that she was tender all over and likely has arthritis so she has been started on pain relief. Surprisingly her teeth were okay for her age.
During her time at the vete Sprite was very weak and shy spending most of her time resting. She must have needed that sleep after everything she had been through.
She is now out of the vets and in foster care . We will update you on her progress in foster care soon, so keep an eye on the page for updates.
Her three day stay at the vet was costly but she was in such poor condition desperately needed it. The total cost for this vet visit came to £1,436 and it is likely to increase over time as she remains in our care. She will need her thyroid rechecked and may require further treatment in the future.
If you can spare £1 towards her care, we would really appreciate it. Every little bit adds up to make a real difference.
