Help 100 Girls Watch Rule Breakers
Tax deductible
Hi everyone,
I’m Sophia Shen, a high school student, proud member of FTC Robotics Team 21229 (Quality Control), and proud representative of nonprofit Candy Can, a 501(c)3 organization that supports empowering communities through creative problem-solving, innovation, and access to technology and education.
I'm raising funds to gift 100 girls the chance to watch the newly released film Rule Breakers: the inspiring true story of Afghanistan’s first all-girls robotics team, the Afghan Dreamers. These young women defied deep-rooted cultural barriers to pursue STEM, build robots, and compete on the world stage, proving that with resilience and support, girls can build anything.
Now, I want to give more girls the chance to see this story and maybe even start building their own.
Our Goal: $1,000
To send 100 girls on an empowering journey, starting with a movie, and hopefully leading to a robotics team of their own.
Rule Breakers is currently available on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Google Play. The movie will be gifted via those platforms’ corresponding gift cards.
* $10.00 = rental of Rule Breakers (please note support for the girls can only be given in $10 increments per platform requirements even though the rental only costs $5.99 on most platforms)
* $12.99 = full purchase so they can rewatch and share with family or friends
* $25+ helps launch a new robotics team or sponsor a STEM starter kit
100% of donations go towards movie gifts and hands-on STEM opportunities for girls. Any extra funds will directly support girls who are inspired to start robotics teams — covering:
* Robotics registration fees (e.g., FIRST LEGO League or FTC)
* Starter kits and supplies
Why This Matters
As someone who’s been on a robotics team for the past few years, I’ve noticed something troubling:
Most teams, including mine and nearly every team we’ve competed against, are still overwhelmingly male-dominated in their technical roles. Even at this year’s FTC World Championships with teams from all over the world participating, and where my team proudly competed, the pattern was the same across the world. Girls are present, but often pushed toward non-technical roles, like marketing or outreach.
We can’t expect girls to pursue STEM if they never see themselves in it.
That’s why this film matters. Girls need to see themselves in STEM stories.
They need to see girls who look like them, speak like them, think like them doing the big things. That’s what Rule Breakers is, and with your help, we can make sure 100 girls get to press “Play” on a film that says:
“Yes, you can build robots too. Yes, you belong here.”
Let’s Raise the Next Generation of Rule Breakers
Rule Breakers isn’t just a movie, it’s a mirror.
It shows girls what’s possible when they break boundaries and build futures. With your help, we can inspire 100 girls to believe in their own power and give them the tools to take the next step.
Thank you so much for believing in this vision.
Let’s make something amazing happen.
With gratitude,
Sophia Shen
