Helms Elementary Odyssey of the Mind

Helms Elementary School is proud to announce their Odyssey of the Mind team of seven 4th and 5th grade students have qualified to compete at the organization’s World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan on May 22-26, 2019.

Odyssey of the Mind is the largest creative problem-solving competition in the world. Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division. The students are tasked with writing an original script, creating their own props, scenery, and costumes, while working together as a team. The competition also requires them to solve spontaneous problems under 5 minutes without prior knowledge, sparking innovation and quick-wit.

Helms began participating in Odyssey of the Mind in 2015 and has been sending teams to compete since.
This is the first year Helms has sent six teams to the competition and the first time in the school’s 100-year history to have a team qualify for the "Worlds." This year’s team consists of seven bilingual, bi-literate and bi-cultural superstars led by their dedicated Coach Rhesa Cedillo.

In March 2019, they competed at the Houston Regional competition and placed 5th out of 18 to advance to the State level. Then in April, they placed 2nd out of 12 to advance to “Worlds,” of which only 1st and 2nd places advance.  They have been working incredibly hard since September 2018 to accomplish these goals and are now eligible to compete against 50+ teams from 20+ countries at the World Finals. We could not be prouder! Now our community is excited to get them there, and we are asking for your support.

What will it take for our team to attend?

·       $2,000 (approx.) per student with chaperone/parent for campus housing, meals, air, and transportation
·       $500 (approx.) to ship our scenery, props, and costumes to Michigan State University

We deeply appreciate any tax-deductible donation that will help our team and the future teams in our organization. This will allow our talented students to experience an unforgettable opportunity to showcase their hard work, commitment and dedication with other schools from around the world. We are very proud to represent Helms Elementary, the City of Houston and the State of Texas.  Thank you for your consideration.
