Hi, we are Hanne and Alexei, the parents of our beloved 15-year-old daughter, Helmi. We are based in Helsinki, Finland.

In October 2024, an ultrasound revealed a large cyst in Helmi’s right ovary. What we hoped would be harmless turned out to be cancer. Within days, Helmi underwent surgery and was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer: mucinous ovarian carcinoma. From that moment on, she began a brave and difficult journey.

At first, chemotherapy seemed to be working, and Helmi was able to complete her treatment at the beginning of the year. We allowed ourselves to hope. Sadly, the cancer returned soon after. In the summer of 2025, Helmi began a second round of treatments, but this time the disease progressed at a devastating speed, spreading throughout her abdominal cavity.

Her oncology team determined that surgery was no longer an option, and despite intensive chemotherapy, the cancer continued to grow. We also tried immunotherapy, which caused severe esophagitis but was unable to control the disease.

As a last, desperate attempt to prolong our daughter’s life, we flew with Helmi to London to undergo surgery performed by a renowned oncological surgeon. We hoped the operation might at least improve her quality of life and give us more time together. Tragically, the surgery revealed an extremely advanced stage of disease with no possibility of surgical treatment.

We were able to take Helmi from London back home where she entered hospice and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Valentine’s Day.

Today, our family is facing the unimaginable: the loss of our child. Alongside this profound grief, we are also struggling with medical expenses totaling approximately €40,000.
