Hilf uns, unser Land in Portugal wieder aufzubauen

Vor wenigen Wochen zerstörten die verheerenden Waldbrände in Portugal über 150.000 Hektar Land – darunter auch unser Grundstück, die „Quinta Abelha Azul“ am Rande des kleinen Dorfs Vila do Mato. Als wir nachts den Schein der Flammen hinter unserem Wald sahen, entschieden wir uns, unser Land zu verlassen. Wir waren wochenlang mit dem Bau unseres kleinen Hauses beschäftigt und Laura hatte gerade erst unseren Sohn Nero geboren.

Die Menschen unseres Dorfes wurden evakuiert und es flogen Löschflugzeuge und Helikopter über uns.

Wir entschieden gemeinsam, dass Nico wieder zurückfährt, um zu sehen, ob noch etwas zu retten ist.

Als er ankam, brannte der Wald um das Grundstück. Das Feuer war schon einmal über das Land gefegt, hatte aber die wichtigsten Dinge wie das Haus, das Solarsystem und den Wohnwagen verschont. In den nachfolgenden Stunden kam das Feuer ein zweites Mal von der anderen Seite und Nico hielt die Flammen vom Haus fern bis am Morgen die „Bombeiros“, die Feuerwehr, dazukam und das Feuer endgültig löschte. Einen Kilometer weiter starben tragischerweise in dieser Nacht drei Bombeiros in dem Versuch, die Waldbrände zu beenden.

Wir wollen zukünftig unser Land besser schützen und auch dazu beitragen, dass das Feuer über „unseren“ Eintrittsweg nicht mehr Richtung Dorf kommen kann. Dafür brauchen wir eure Hilfe

Wir möchten einen großen, feuerfesten Wassertank bauen, eine leistungsstarke Pumpe anschaffen, Feuerschneisen anlegen und Schläuche vergraben, um in Zukunft besser gewappnet zu sein. Unser Ziel ist es, nicht nur unser Zuhause, sondern auch das umliegende Dorf und die Natur schützen zu können. Wir wollen nicht nur unsere 34 verbrannten Bäume wieder pflanzen, sondern auch die benachbarten verbrannten Waldstücke wieder aufforsten, dieses Mal mit schlecht brennenden Baumarten. Wir wollen weiter ein naturnahes, nachhaltiges Leben führen.

A few weeks ago, devastating wildfires in Portugal destroyed over 150,000 hectares of land—including our property, the "Quinta Abelha Azul," located on the edge of the small village of Vila do Mato. When we saw the glow of the flames behind our forest at night, we decided to leave our land. We had been busy for weeks building our small house, and Laura had just given birth to our son, Nero.

The people in our village were evacuated, and firefighting planes and helicopters flew overhead. We decided together that Nico would go back to see if there was anything left to save.

When he arrived, the forest around the property was ablaze. The fire had already swept through once but had spared the most important things like the house, the solar system, and the caravan. In the following hours, the fire returned from the other side, and Nico kept the flames away from the house until the "Bombeiros," the firefighters, arrived in the morning and finally extinguished the fire. Tragically, a kilometer away, three firefighters lost their lives that night trying to contain the wildfire.

In the future, we want to protect our land better and contribute to preventing the fire from reaching the village through "our" entry path. For this, we need your help.

We aim to build a large, fire-resistant water tank, acquire a powerful pump, create firebreaks, and bury hoses to be better prepared in the future. Our goal is not only to protect our home but also to safeguard the surrounding village and nature. We want to replant our 34 burned trees and help reforest the neighboring scorched areas, this time with tree species that are less prone to burning. We want to continue living a natural, sustainable life.
