Heidy's Cancer Fight: A Mother's Determination

I wanted to share the story of Heidy Perez, a young single mother who I have known for many years, starting as coworkers at a dental office. Her entire life is a story of her refusing to give up on her dream of a better life in the United States and then of giving her daughter, Melany, the best life she possibly could provide. I watched her as she studied to become a United States citizen, and that’s when I learned how expensive it is to do so. It was so important to her, so she set her goal and worked hard for it.

She has always worked numerous jobs at the same time, even though we worked full-time together. She wanted her daughter to learn from example that hard work pays off in life, that if you want to reach a goal, you work for it and don’t expect it to be handed to you.

And through all of this, she has remained incredibly grateful for the life she has and has always offered to help another in need. Her kind and lively spirit has remained intact while encountering many obstacles without the benefit of family close by to lean on. For those of you who have been on the receiving end of one of her smiles and infectious laugh, you understand the spirit I speak of.

So this is the FIRST time Heidy has said she understands she needs help from others.

Her body, that has always been strong enough to allow her to work as hard as she does, needs to rest as she gets the treatment needed over the next 6 to 9 months.

At the age of 38, she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has just undergone a double mastectomy and is about to begin 4 months of chemotherapy every 2 weeks at Dana Farber, followed by radiation.

For the first time, she will not be able to work at all. She has applied for help but was just denied as she “ makes too much” .

She lives paycheck to paycheck and has had no income since the start of this and won’t for many many months.

So she now must waste her energy fighting this error and worrying how to live week to week.

We are in the dental profession, which does not offer benefits such as disability.

She needs help that can be given in many ways.

Donations using this platform or directly to her. She certainly will need funds to cover the basic cost of living along with increased expenses that occur traveling to Boston for treatment.

Transportation, providing rides and company going into Boston.

Su espíritu amable y vivaz se ha mantenido intacto a pesar de enfrentar muchos obstáculos sin el apoyo de una familia cercana. Quienes hayan sido víctimas de una de sus sonrisas y su risa contagiosa, comprenderán a qué me refiero.

Esta es la PRIMERA vez que Heidy dice que entiende que necesita ayuda.

Su cuerpo, que siempre ha sido lo suficientemente fuerte como para permitirle trabajar tan duro, necesita descansar mientras recibe el tratamiento necesario durante los próximos 6 a 9 meses.
