If there is one word to describe my sister it is extraordinary! I will start by saying my birthday will be forever changed. It is not a day of happiness but a day that our family started the hardest battel of our lives. My beautiful sister, Heidi was diagnosed with stage 1B2 cervical cancer on December 6th 2016. In January of 2017 she started chemo treatment once a week and daily radiation treatment. She fought day in and day out for several months until June of 2016 when we were overjoyed when she went into remission. As a family we could breath. For 3 years Heidi was believed to be cancer free. On February 14th 2020 she went into the emergency room with left flank pain. At the time the emergency staff did a CT scan and found what they thought to be cancer. They called her oncologist and on February 18th she went in for a PET scan and on the 19th our world stopped, the cancer had returned. This time it had spread to her lymph nodes and thyroid. After meeting with her oncologist she learned that the cancer recurrence is not curable and she will live and fight this fight as long as she lives. Heidi has just finished 6 rounds of platinum chemo treatments and will be required to take a maintenance dose through a port in her chest for as long as her body is able to tolerate the medication. Each maintenance infusion costs over $38,000 some of which insurance covers. However, there is still a significant number of out of pocket expenses that Heidi is faced with to maintain for her ongoing
care. Heidi of course has all of the support and love from her family but has also been in a relationship for the last 11 years and all though it takes a very strong person to go along on this journey her boyfriend who she thought she would spend her life with ended the relationship on her last day of chemo leaving her in the hardest battle of her life. If I could trade places with her I would in a heartbeat she is the glue that keeps this family together! We fight everyday just for her because no one fights alone! I just need her to know that wherever life takes her she has support and I would like her to do all of the things she has ever dreamed of! She is now having to go through the financial burden a second time just to fight for her life! Anything helps and we are so appreciative for any amount that is donated! We had a fundraiser event planned but due to covid 19 we had to change our plans!
