On December 28, 2019 our lives were changed abruptly when we learned that our mother was in a car accident heading southbound on I-49 in Pineville, MO. She sustained life-threatening head injuries and was rushed to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin where the doctors performed emergency surgery to save her life. That night, she was airlifted to KU Medical Center in Kansas City.
Although she is healing and making significant progress, the traumatic brain injuries she has sustained are severe and there is a long road ahead of us.
At this time, she has not woken up and is going to be moved to a long-term care facility closer to us. While she recovers and we patiently wait until she wakes up, there are an unfortunate amount of expenses that we are left with while we try to cope with all of this.
Her two youngest children, 14 year old Shyla and Jett, will be in the care of her 23 year old son Dakota while we await recovery. On top of these abrupt legal expenses, living expenses, travel expenses, etc, Dakota and his girlfriend Emma will be continuing to work full time while going to school to finish their degrees.
Now the future is uncertain, but we know that Melissa Johnson is strong and will surprise us all.
We would like to thank all of the medical staff that saved our mother's life, and to those who have cared for her so well in Kansas City.
Any contributions, no matter how small, will help our family significantly.
Thank you.
