My name is Holley Durham and I am fundraising on behalf of my son Shane Durham and his girlfriend Laura Miller. Their dog Juneau is like a child to them and she has just been diagnosed with lymphoma. I am hoping to raise money to cover the cost of chemotherapy so they can focus on her care and being there for her. Here is a message from Laura:
Hi everyone. First of all, thank you for even considering a donation to our cause, I know there are many deserving fundraisers out there and it means the world to us that you're here on our page. This may seem long-winded but I really want to illustrate what Juneau means to us and what your contribution will mean to Juneau.
We adopted Juneau from the Kanawha County Humane Association in September of 2015. She truly chose us - we had seen most of the dogs and were about to leave when we walked past her kennel. She leaned up hard against the gate and put her head against my hand. There were no second thoughts, I walked to the front desk and said we wanted to take her home. She has been our baby ever since.
(Juneau's first day home with us, 9/22/2015)
Juneau has been with us through a lot. A bad living situation and subsequent move, lots of familial health issues, the untimely passing of her "brother" Jack, job changes, unemployment, a pandemic, a puppy...she has enriched our lives every single day since the day we met her. If there is one thing I know about Juneau, it's that she is a fighter. She is stubborn and definitely doesn't take no for an answer. She is strong and brave even though she is secretly a little scaredy cat. And I know she isn't ready to give up, so we are not ready to give up on her. The lymphoma diagnosis came as quite a shock to us as she is otherwise healthy and active. At this time we do not know what stage the lymphoma has progressed to, but staging tests are on the agenda for her first week of treatment (I'll attach her treatment schedule below.)
Chemo schedule sent to us by the vet (her total treatment will be 27 weeks, some lines were cut off)
We have spoken extensively to Juneau's vet, Dr. Graham, at Valley West. We have been given a high estimate of $300 a week for 27 weeks, totaling $8100. Some weeks may be lower, but there is also a chance she will need to be hospitalized for side effects such as dehydration or low white blood cell count, although that chance is low. Without chemotherapy, we have been given 2-3 short months left with Juneau. However, with this chemotherapy protocol, upwards of 80% of dogs achieve remission for 8-12 months.
If you've read this far, thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's not easy for me to ask for help, and the decision to choose chemotherapy was not an easy decision. I love Juneau with everything I have and she deserves a fighting chance. I will post updates as to how the money is spent at the vet and also try to set up a fund at the vet if you would rather donate directly to Valley West. Any money that happens to be left over will be donated to the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association in Juneau's name, since we were so lucky to find her there. Shane and I love you all more than words can tell. Thank you again and enjoy some adorable Juney-ness!
