Heather's Cancer has Returned, for a Third Time!
On November 1st, 2022, Heather was first diagnosed with Cervical Cancer.
We found out later, after pathology testing, that it's rare and aggressive; Non-HPV Adenocarcinoma of the Cervix, Gastric-Type, Stage 2B. There a very few studies and fewer oncologists who have encountered it.
And it is aggressive! In November 2022, Heather went through surgery, a radical hysterectomy, the day before her twins 16th birthday, followed by the standard cervical cancer treatment of 25 radiation sessions and 7 cisplatin chemotherapy injections from the beginning of January 2023 to the middle of February.
It worked for a while, but in less than two years, on October 1st, 2024, she found out her cancer had metastasized, bringing her to Stage IV. Another surgery found four metastatic tumors. One in her colon and another in her large intestine required cutting out and sewing the sections back, leaving her with an ileostomy bag until healed.
This time, the oncologists tried gastric chemotherapy drugs, FOLFOX, which included two chemotherapy drugs - one injected at the hospital over an hours time and the other she carried with her for 46 hours, slowing delivering its poison through her port, over the course of SIX MONTHS, from December 2024 to the end of May 2025. She went to work during this time, struggling more after each chemotherapy session.
After her Ileostomy reversal surgery at the end of August, she took some much needed recovery time. Healing intestines can leak, causing infections that could lead to death, but the toll on her body from chemotherapy was worse.
October scans to prepare for her return to work showed a growth, an aggressive growth that defied the FOLFOX chemotherapy, in her original pelvic area, a local recurrence.
So, Heather is once again fighting for her life, fighting to stay with her children and husband, and fighting to help another woman who might have the same cancer get better treatment.
