Hello and Aloha to Friends of Heath Allen ,
After talking to a couple of friends of Heath and paddlers in the Bay Area, we realized there is a need to organize a fundraising effort to support Heath deal with a major medical situation , recover, and plan for next steps in life.
Fellow paddler and friend Heath Allen suffered a major stroke about seven weeks ago. He is working his way through physical therapy and making progress. He was unable to walk or stand for a long time and is still working on it. Heath lives on Oahu, moving there about 5 years ago from the Bay Area. He paddled with SFOCC and for a short time with Okalani. His paddling really took off when he moved to Oahu and he raced the Molokai Hoe the last five years with Healani and Kailua OCC.
Heath works in construction and, as you can imagine, this event could have a large impact on his career and next steps in life. Insurance is covering a lot but there are still medical costs and being out of work and having to plan a life transition is tough with many unknowns. In our opinion, having some funds to help with this would lower stress and help with healing. It is also the right thing to do. We all know Heath would help us if we were in the same situation. Heath didn't ask us to do anything but we are compelled to help. Also I checked with him before posting this. The amount we are looking at to start is $3000 but if we can raise more that would be great.
We considered just doing Paypal, but this platform is easier to share and manage, since we are all over the place. Heath and his father will manage his own funds when they come in.
If you don't know Heath well, here is a little more about his background.
-Heath loves paddling and the ocean. He has shaped his own surf boards and surfed in the Bay Area and Hawaii.
-Heath cares about his friends, the globe, and environment. He is passionate about equality.
-Heath is an adventurous spirit and participated in 100 mile bike rides and has taken a unique approach to life and career.
-He also has a great sense of humor that helps him see the positive in this challenge.
If you can't contribute at this time, you can always send him a card or email.
