Hi, my name is Kayla and I'm currently raising money for a preventative mastectomy.
To give you a little context, just over two years ago, I had some genetic testing done and discovered that I carry the CHEK2 genetic mutation.
A lot of the time, when we hear about breast cancer related to a genetic mutation, it’s primarily in relation to BRCA1 or BRCA2. Without getting into specifics, CHEK2 is kind of like BRCA’s cousin.
Based on this mutation and family history, I’m estimated to have a 46% chance of developing breast cancer within my lifetime - with most initial CHEK2 cases typically occurring at younger ages. There is an even higher risk that there would be a recurrence after a first diagnosis.
It’s taken some time, a few doctor recommendations for the procedure, and a lot of support from friends, family, and my wonderful partner, Tucker, to make a decision on my path forward. It's safe to say that I’ve landed on being unwilling to continue to live in fear or leave breast cancer at (nearly) a coin-toss away. So, I’m moving forward with a preventative mastectomy this year and am hosting a benefit concert to try and offset some of the cost!
This page is being used to raise funds at the event itself and for those who may want to donate but are not able to attend.
If you are able to donate or share this with your friends, it would mean the world.
For anyone who can't make it, I will be sure to post an update with a link to the video footage!
Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have - I’m a pretty open book.
