The Camara ‘ohana lives a life of service and helping others, never expecting anything in return for the acts of aloha they constantly give. Although they would never ask, I know they will forever be appreciative of any kōkua you may be able to provide to support them through this lifelong journey ahead of them.
Recently, their unborn son was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect which affects many babies (1 born every 15 minutes!). And even though this might seem common, there are many challenges and uncertainties that come along with this diagnosis. As of right now their precious baby boy will need 3 surgeries. The first surgery will be shortly after birth, then another 3-6 months after, and (hopefully) the last one will be a few years later. There are limited medical resources and no surgeons on island for this condition. Because of this, the Camara ‘ohana will have to travel back and forth to Seattle where their son can receive the best care.
The current plan is to be able to travel to Seattle a few weeks before the birth and then be able to stay for the uncertain amount of time for the baby to receive his first surgery, which may take 1-6 six weeks after birth. After this initial surgery, they are hoping to be able to plan for future surgeries with more certainty. However their main goal is to just be able to provide the best services for their son.
Shawna is currently the program coordinator for the GEAR UP program at Waipahu High School, which she loves because of the students she serves! Will recently graduated from school, loves his work, and loves that he can support his family. Even though their family has medical insurance, the medical bills and associated needs will not all be covered. Both of them are trying to figure out how to care for their son, as well as provide care for their three year old daughter Mili during this time. The combination of medical expenses, travel, lodging, and having to take off of work for a large amount of time is extremely overwhelming.
The Camara ‘ohana is still coming to terms with this long road ahead of them, but they are still so excited for their son to join the family.
If you are able to contribute any amount, it would make a great difference for this ‘ohana. We would appreciate any help you may be able to provide but understand if it is not possible. There will be future opportunities to support the family, and we ask that you please keep their son in your thoughts and prayers. #HeartsForClyde
