Daylenis' Heart Fund

This gofundme page was created by the family, friends and co-workers of Daylenis Acosta.  We love you and are praying for your speedy recovery.  May you hold your baby, Daniella, soon and for many years to come.  This is her story.

Daylenis gave birth on February 16, 2015 to a beautiful, healthy, baby girl, Daniella. Welcoming their first born should have been a joyous, momentous occasion for her and her husband, Jansel. However, the days leading up to the emergency C-section would forever change their lives in more ways than just their new baby, Daniella.

Working side by side with Daylenis for almost 7 years, all of us at work came to know her very well. We are family....as most workplaces are. She is a kind hearted, thoughtful person with a great work ethic and a smile and laugh that could brighten even the grumpiest of patients.

Everyone in the office knew how difficult this pregnancy had been for Daylenis but she was in the home stretch and the doctors expected an early delivery. However, in the last few days of her pregnancy, what should have been a blessed experience for her and her family turned bitter sweet.

Daylenis began having contractions, coupled with shortness of breath and chest pain. During Valentine’s weekend she made multiple trips to the hospital until the doctors decided to keep her for observation. She was previously sent home because she was not dilated enough. Upon her second trip back to the hospital doctors performed a CT scan and discovered that Daylenis had fluid in her lungs and was going into heart failure. Daylenis was diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy, a rare heart condition that can appear just days before labor and be masked by normal, end of pregnancy, symptoms. With a heart rate of 150 the doctors decided it would be best to deliver Daniella by C-section.

Daniella was born and transferred to St. Joseph’s Women's hospital while Daylenis was cared for at St. Joseph’s main hospital, in the Cardiac Critical Care Unit. Unfortunately as these last couple of days have unfolded, Daylenis' heart has not improved and, in fact, it has gotten weaker. Doctors have told this, 26 year old, previously healthy, new mother that she may need a new heart.

Having not seen her baby yet and still in a medically induced coma since the C-section, Daylenis was transferred to another area hospital, Tampa General.  Doctors have tried numerous procedures to help Daylenis, the most recent being the addition of a Left Ventricular Assist Device.  This device is used to support heart function and blood flow in people who have weakened hearts.  In some, it is just a temporary measure until a donor is available or until the heart heals.  In others, it may be needed the rest of their lives.  Where Daylenis falls, still remains to be seen but because of her age she has been put on the top of the transplant list.

Her family is devastated! Daylenis' Cuban born parents can do nothing but pray, as they try and fully grasp the heartbreaking circumstances they have been dealt.

We, at work, being healthcare providers, want to help in any way we can. Despite feeling helpless and powerless over the situation, the best we can do is pray ourselves, in hopes that we can selfishly continue to see that smile for many years to come. So, knowing that these medical bills are going to quickly pile up for Daylenis and her family, the best we can do is start this campaign.  With her mother having to take a leave of absence from work to take care of Daniella and Jansel doing the same, as well as refusing to leave Daylenis’ side, this family could use some help and support.

Please help us give Daylenis her heart of gold back. We know she can pull through this but she needs some encouragement and financial assistance.  She is very strong!  Thank you for reading and thank you for your donation!  If you are unable to make a donation please keep Daylenis in your thoughts and prayers...every little bit helps!
