I am a medically retired Yeoman from the US Coast Guard.  After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a very aggressive coronary artery disease which caused numerous heart attacks (19 cardiac stents later), and having to start dialysis due to renal failure, I have been placed on a Heart and Kidney transplant list.  Health insurance will pay for most of the transplant, but out of pocket medical bills and expenses will be around 10 thousand.  I am hoping to raise at least that.  Any extra will be donated back to the hospital performing the transplant: the University of Maryland Medical Center.
