My name is Kate Cash and I am a photographer, but this isn’t about me, this isn’t my story, I’m only playing a very small role …..

This is about an incredible young man called Fidele Wabenga and Season of the Time Media Production learning centre based in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya.

Kakuma, a Swahili word meaning ‘Nowhere’, is home to one of the world’s largest refugee settlements, in northwestern Kenya, around 300,000 displaced individuals each with a story of resilience, courage and hope. Yet despite the endless daily adverse conditions faced by those living in the camp, the communities are filled with dreamers, innovators and change-makers, determined to build a better future.

One of these amazing individuals is Fidele, originally from Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Fidele has been living in Kakuma Camp since 2013 due to the civil unrest in Congo; this though does not deter him from his determination to make a positive impact on the world.

Season of the Time Media Production learning centre was originally started by a former Kakuma Camp refugee, but after he was resettled by the UN the learning centre Project Director role was handed to Fidele and under his leadership, Season of the Time has spearheaded transformative initiatives offering free courses in photography, film-making, music production and computer skills to the young refugees in the camp, enabling them the tools to learn and express their creativity and to give them the opportunity to share their experiences, turning their voices into powerful agents of change. Above all of this though, Season of the Time has evolved into a vibrant hub for young people to experience some sort of ‘normality’ regardless of their situation and background.

The learning centre relies heavily on generous donations from both individuals and organisations to acquire equipment and resources.

So where do I fit into all of this ? I have been granted permission to enter Kakuma Refugee Camp and in October (2025) I will be heading out solo to visit the camp for a week, not just to document the incredible work being carried out by Season of the Time, but I will also have the privilege of leading some photography workshops with the young refugees at the learning centre.

Any money donated will be used to purchase equipment for the Season of the Time Media Production learning centre, which I shall deliver to them in person when I go in October. Any amount you’re willing to contribute is so gratefully appreciated, and if you aren’t able to contribute money at this time, a share with your friends and family would mean the world.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
