The Team:
Team Usually Late (Ruk, Jay & Sean) are setting out on a challenge to run the Great Ocean Road Half Marathon (23 km) on 19th May 2019 with a goal of raising funds for a school for children with hearing impairments in Sri Lanka.
The Story:
‘St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf’ in Ragama, Sri Lanka commit to providing children with a hearing impairment a holistic education, empowering them to achieve their dreams and become productive citizens contributing to society.
The school cares for 150 children with 31 staff members. Two teachers have a hearing impairment and are past students of St Joseph’s school.
The school was established in 1935. Missionary Belgian sisters who were ministering to the tuberculosis patients at the Ragama chest hospital were approached to begin the school. The loving service of the sisters was rewarded with more children joining and an increase of the staff. The school was run by the generous donations received from benefactors locally and abroad.
As the years passed, the services at the school went on smoothly and the standard of education kept improving. By witnessing the way of life and loving services of the Belgian sisters to the children with a disability, young local girls joined the congregation. The Belgian sisters trained and prepared the local sisters to carry on the mission that was entrusted to them.
In 1965 due to a government policy, all religious nursing sisters had to leave from government hospitals. It became very difficult to renew the visas of missionary sisters. As a result, the Belgian sisters departed the island giving up their services to tuberculosis patients at Ragama Hospital and St Joseph’s school.
This was not the end….just a beginning of another era. Local sisters gradually graduated in taking responsibility and developed it to the invaluable educational facility it is today.

How you can help:
The school requires two laptops, two TV’s and a projector to help children with a hearing impairment progress their education using visual aid.
Our target is to raise the maximum funds possible to provide the much needed learning tools by mid-June 2019. The equipment will be personally delivered to the school.
For those in Melbourne who would like to keep fit going into the winter months, you are welcome to join our training runs.
The costs:
15” Laptop: Approx. AUD $1100
43” TV: Approx. AUD $600
Projector: Approx. AUD $800
On behalf of Team UL, thank you very much for your generosity. We look forward to crossing the finish line with you and sharing the children’s smiles.
