Hey everyone, this Go Fund Me has been a long time coming. For awhile now, I really struggled with whether or not this was the best thing for me to do. However, after receiving a lot of feedback and encouragement, I decided to take the plunge and start a Go Fund Me.
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Kyle J. Howard. I am a Christian theologian & trauma informed soul care provider. Though my soul care/counseling ministry is comprehensive, I am primarily known for my work in both spiritual abuse and racial/race based trauma care. My vocation & passion in ministry is to care for Christians who have been deeply wounded by the church and to help them heal from the impact of spiritual trauma; especially for BIPOC (black, indigenous, & People of Color) believers. The majority of my time and ministry is invested in caring for victims of spiritual and racial trauma in the church who lack the socio-economic means to pay for counseling. Personally, I believe that no one who has been hurt by the church should have to pay for their own trauma healing and so I've devoted my life to provided free care to those who need it. Through Patreon support, I have offered *free* Soul Care to minorities who struggle with racial trauma or or who have endured spiritual abuse for the past few years now.
I have started this Go Fund Me because there have been several health issues I have been struggling with for a long time that I am seeking support for.
- Chronic back & Joint Pain.
I was diagnosed with Scoliosis when I was around twelve years of age, since that time, I have struggled greatly with severe back pain. For years now, it has regularly taken me over an hour to get out of bed every morning due to the severity of the pain and throughout the day I have lived with the feeling of a knife stabbing me in between my shoulder blades. I have struggled with this for 25 years. Over the 15 years, I have also struggled with severe joint pain primarily in my knees and back as well. I have sought help for these things for decades and I had largely given up hope. However, Recently, I discovered a Chiropractic office that specializes in the kind of issues I have and 6 months ago I began to visit them multiple times a week. Over the past six months, I have seen tremendous improvement. Though I still have a ways to go, for the first time in many years, my pain hasn't been unbearable though still constant. This office has been tremendously generous and supportive towards my family and they have offered me a significant ministry discount. However, the next 6 months of care is going to cost $1,155.
- Corrective Vision Surgery
I have extremely bad eyesight. May eyesight was weak when I began seminary but after finishing several degrees and reading a multitude of books, it got extremely worse. Currently, my eyesight is so poor that a new pair of glasses will cost me around $500. On top of that, new contacts are about $200 for a single box for each eye. As I write this, I am wearing glasses that have about an 8 year old prescription. My prescription is so old because new glasses are so expensive. Given the poorness of my eyesight, along with the cost of new glasses and contacts, I began to look into LASIK surgery for my eyes. After going through an eye exam, I learned I was a great candidate for both LASIK and another more recent procedure that is less intrusive. Because I also struggle with severe Dry Eyes, this new procedure has been recommended to me. Bit doesn't require cutting the eye and so it minimizes risk of causing my dry eyes to get worse and due to no longer masking my dry eyes with contacts, it also may serve to actually allow my eyes to heal from the dry eye problem itself. This new procedure is a little more costly than the traditional LASIK but also has a much faster recovery time and less risks due to not needing to cut. The procedure will cost $4,000. I am scheduled to get the procedure next Friday, on April 16th. I am planning to take out a loan for the procedure, but it would be awesome if my family did not have to go into debt for these medical expenses.
- Therapy
Unfortunately, I not only care for victims of spiritual abuse & racial trauma, I am a victim myself. In fact, I got into the work I currently do after my family and I endured devastating spiritual abuse and racial trauma ourselves; both in the church and in the Seminary context. For several years now, I have devoted my life to serving others in their trauma recovery, but due to finances and primarily offering my services free of charge, I have not had the expenses to pay for therapy for myself. If, by God's grace, I am able to surpass my goal; whatever funds I receive in excess will go towards therapy/counseling for myself & possibly family as we continue our own trauma healing journey. it's possible that funds, if goal is significantly passed, would go towards paying off debt that my family has been carrying since Seminary.
