Health Heroes Unite: Plea for my NYLF Journey

Hafa Adai! My name is Anna G. Rice, and I am a 9th-grade student from Guam, USA. I am reaching out with a sincere request that holds much importance to me and my future endeavors. I have recently earned a coveted spot at the National Youth Leadership Forum: Medicine and Health Care by WorldStrides to be held at UCLA in the summer of 2024.
The NYLF Medicine & Health Care program offers hands-on learning, simulating medical professionals' techniques, providing practical experience in activities. Renowned leaders and physicians share insights in seminars and panels, offering perspectives on post-medical school life and diverse career paths. The program includes visits to medical schools or simulation centers, offering a comprehensive experience of life as a healthcare provider.
Being from a single-parent, low-income household with limited means, pursuing my dreams of pre-med and medical schooling heavily relies on scholarships. Attending this event is important in enhancing my chances of securing the necessary scholastic resources in the future. Throughout my academic journey, I have diligently maintained a high GPA and class standing, in addition to actively engaging in various extracurricular activities. I believe these endeavors reflect my commitment as a deserving student.
My hope in attending this conference is to enrich my understanding of healthcare. In this pursuit, I face significant financial challenges and am seeking to raise an amount of $7,000 to cover travel and program costs.
The total cost of the experience encompasses:
- tuition, which on its own incur expenses up to $4,064,
- airfare for myself, ranging from $1,500 to $2,000 — as I am coming from Guam, which is distanced at 6,000+ miles from Los Angeles, California,
- lodging and miscellaneous costs (e.g. hotel accommodation fees, meals, transportation, and any required materials or equipment for the conference) for the duration of my forum attendance, approximating the expense at around $1,000.
This heartfelt appeal of mine goes beyond personal aspirations. I truly believe that this is an investment in the future of healthcare and the positive impact on my local community and island of Guam. My dream of contributing meaningfully to the field of medicine does rely on the generosity of sponsors.
