Mary's Polymyalgia Treatment Fund

Mary Irwin’s passion is to help others on the journey to heal body, mind and spirit.

After a 19-year career in Health Information administration, in 2006, Mary began to study massage and alternative health therapies, graduating from the Prairie Training Institute in Alberta.  In 2007, Mary founded her practice “Helping Hands and Heart Massage” to offer all community members (women, men, and seniors) affordable therapeutic massage while embracing the holistic approach to health through the healing power of human touch.

In addition to her devotion to treating her clients, she has been an ongoing long-time volunteer for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Her caring spirit also drew her to a concern for the well-being of those who carry deep life burdens, and she volunteered for a number of years as a board member with Burden Bearers Counselling Service in Peace River, Alberta.

Unfortunately in the past two and a half years, Mary has been unable to give full attention to her passion for helping others, while she suffers with gripping pain of her own.  She has been diagnosed with multiple conditions – polymyalgia rheumatica, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. These diagnoses cause Mary constant muscle, joint and nerve pain.  On many days, she is unable to get out of bed or to make it to her kitchen without severe pain. Compounding her polymyalgia, Mary has had a chronically degenerated spine riddled with osteoarthritis and a growing synovial cyst on her spine, causing some compression on the spinal nerves.

Despite years of treatments and medical therapies, Mary’s condition continues to get worse with some loss of nerve functioning and muscle loss in her legs.  The steroid (Prednisone) treatments wreak havoc with extreme side effects.  So Mary has found relief (albeit minor) in acupuncture, magnesium, proteolytic enzymes and other holistic approaches to managing the pain – if even temporarily.  That small window of pain relief is dwindling and hardly anything is effective any more to take away the pain.

We’ve got new hope for a cure!  In July, Mary will visit the CIPAG Clinic in Mexico.  For more than 20 years, Dr. Isai Castillo has provided holistic medical treatment for patients suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, various types of cancer, MS, and other immune system diseases.   Many fellow Canadian citizens have made this journey to Mexico to receive treatments that are not currently available in Canada.  As Mary’s friends and family, we are so inspired by the testimonials from others who have visited the CIPAG Clinic:  Testimonials

This summer, Mary will pursue a daily treatment plan for 21 days to receive intravenous therapy to combat the inflammation in her body and also bring balance to her immune system.

Others have experienced phenomenal change and this is what we wish for Mary.  The cost of transportation, various treatments, tests and the clinic stay is approximately US $10,000.00.  Your contribution will help reach this goal and restore Mary to a pain-free life, in which she can return to her passion to deliver her therapeutic massage service to those in her community.
