Our beloved friend Kareno Hawbolt is facing a health crisis - we are rallying around her and her partner Kimi Hendess to offer them support as they focus on Kareno's healing.

We have all been touched by the love, generosity, care and humour that Kareno so freely offers to the world. Through their farm, Sweet Digz, Kareno and Kimi have given so much over the years - nourishing people with beautiful food, creating a deep sense of community, and sharing their passion for sustainable farming. They are a part of so many circles, families, and communities - now we have an opportunity to surround them with the same love and care they have given to so many of us.

In late February, Kareno was diagnosed with 2 brain tumors. The operable tumor was removed at VGH and identified as an "aggressive" glioblastoma (phase 4), which means it's expected to grow back. The second tumor is inoperable and will be part of the treatment plan moving forward. Kareno’s recovering brilliantly from the surgery and is now focusing on next steps, including care through BC Cancer, a range of complimentary holistic therapies and deep, long-term healing.

Kareno is incredibly determined to do everything possible to make it through this! The median statistical prognosis for this kind of cancer is very scary. This is not going to be Kareno … she's gonna beat the bell curve! She already does so many of the things (healthy diet and lifestyle) that help people survive and thrive with cancer. Kareno will walk the path ahead with her gifts of humour, insight, resilience, and fierce open heartedness. These will serve her well on her healing journey.

Because Sweet Digz Farm is a small, hands-on operation, and this unexpected situation means they will need to pause their work and farm income. So many people have been asking how they can help, so we’re inviting folks to contribute financially to help ease that stress, so that Kareno and Kimi can focus on care, healing, and the things that nourish them. The money shared with them will support medical costs, living expenses, wellness practices, and making space to do fun things they love.

Kareno and Kimi here, both of us wordsmithing together to share our deep appreciation. We are absolutely floored by this outpouring of love and support that is rolling in. It's overwhelming. Each name represents such good times in our lives, or formative times, or a world of connections, and so much love. We don't use social media, so we're astounded to see this move across the geographical spaces where we've lived, where we farm, where you our dear friends live, where we've all come from or moved to, or maybe always stayed rooted.

This roll of donations is like being at a hockey(kareno)/soccer(kimi) game and seeing everyone do the wave. Or a locator map that's locating hearts. This is a big GoLoveMe campaign! It's a big teaching, to receive this generosity. We know this is part of the healing. This is big. The healing is big. The healing is already happening. It's a long road, but this community support is part of it. It's helping us literally feel the freedom to do important things that will help Kareno's healing. We know it's not an easy time for anyone... deep breaths.
