We are California-based friends and family of César Miguel Vega Magallón, a queer, formerly-undocumented artist and advocate for migrant, refugee and returned/deportee rights.
Born in Huentitán el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, César Miguel lived undocumented in California for 25 years before returning to Mexico in 2018. On both sides of the border, they have been a staunch advocate for migrant and deportee rights. Their brilliant poetry and prose continue to inspire us: https://cesarmvm.medium.com/, http://cesarmiguel.com/.
Unfortunately, César Miguel has experienced numerous mental and physical health crises in recent months. In late July, César Miguel's Guadalajara-based family placed them in a mental health facility in the Guadalajara area.
César Miguel's California-based friends and family, including his mother, are launching this fundraiser because we are concerned that this facility is not meeting César Miguel's mental and physical needs. Any funds we raise will go to appropriate inpatient psychosocial treatment and outpatient transitional support. Our fundraising goal of $15,000 is based on the going rate for 60 days of inpatient psychosocial treatment at a well-regarded private facility in the Guadalajara area.
John Flanagan, a California-based attorney and friend of César Miguel, will manage these funds to ensure they are used for their stated ends and, as much as is practicable, with the informed consent of César Miguel.
