Healing Hope: Support a Remarkable Woman’s Recovery

Hi everyone, my name is Saif Almuhairbi and I'm working on trying to help my mom Mary Carter fundraise to pay off her medical bills. On May 13, 2024, unfortunately, the day after Mother's Day my mom went to the clinic, and they informed her she needed to go to the ER. We took her and that became a very disheartening week as we found out she had an infection due to a foot ulcer which in turn led to renal failure accompanied by a cascade of complications and comorbid conditions. The gravity of the situation forced the medical team's hand-they did two surgeries ultimately amputating her right foot to halt the infection. The doctors feared she was going to die as the situation was quite dire as my brother and I thought the same thing. It truly looked like she was not going to make it. Thankfully she made it, and after two weeks in the hospital she has had an incredible recovery. She was officially discharged on May 27, 2024, but now we have another battle ahead, financially.

My mom falls within the percentage of people in the U.S. that doesn't have health insurance. After leaving work to focus solely to run a non-profit known as the Women's Intercultural Center as a volunteer, she sacrificed a lot because she wanted to help others achieve their dreams, to help strengthen individuals/communities. She has always been about giving back, and she was willing to do it because she receives a small pension from my father who passed away from cancer after his time in the military. My brother and I are helping her but with the costs of the medical services and the follow ups we need to do, we are looking for help. My family has never asked for this kind of help, but we want to ensure my mom gets the care she needs.

What we are currently doing to ease the situation: we filed a claim with the VA to try and increase my dad's disability rating from the military due to his exposure to the burn pits and hopefully we will qualify for health insurance for her through that capacity. We are also working with the hospital/doctors we need to follow up with to negotiate a discount. For right now though we need help. My mom has been there to help others when they needed it, and we're hoping that support comes back. Please help us raise the money needed to help pay off her current medical bills and provide her a peace of mind which she currently needs after losing her right foot, which is a new adjustment she will have to get used to. Everything raised will go towards her medical bills and anything extra will go to whatever adjustments she'll need in order to make life a bit easier with just her left leg left.
