Healing Help for K9 Zaback

Donation protected
The La Crosse Professional Police Non-Supervisory Association (LPPNSA) is looking for your support to help one of our furry partners, K9 Zaback on his path to recovery.  LPPNSA is a nonprofit labor organization that represents La Crosse Police Officers in La Crosse, WI and provides philanthropic support to community programs.  The LPPNSA members are raising money for Zaback a 7 year old black German Shepherd who has worked for the La Crosse Police Department as a dual purpose K9 since June 2013. Due to a spinal injury that now requires surgery the department is taking precautionary measures by retiring K9 Zaback to help him on his way to recovery. Zaback has done amazing things throughout his career with the department. He assisted with hundreds of arrests and contributed to removing a large quantity of illegal drugs from the streets of La Crosse and surrounding areas. Zaback not only protected the public, but during his patrol he took the time to meet several community members and participate in educational K9 demonstrations.

On July 23, 2019 during a public demonstration Zaback injured his back. The days following, he was having a hard time controlling his back legs. Over the next couple months Zaback was monitored and was put on bed rest. Unfortunately, Zaback was not recovering from the injury. Zaback was taken to UW Madison for an MRI. The MRI showed Zaback has fluid in his spinal canal from two vertebrae and a compressed vertebra. UW Madison recommended Zaback have surgery so he can regain control of his back legs and alleviate the pressure in his back.

On September 11, 2019 Zaback had surgery and is on the road to a successful recovery which will ultimately make him more comfortable and he will regain control over his back legs.  UW Madison and Thompson Medical Center believe Zaback will not be able to return to full patrol duties, so the department has decided to retire him after surgery to prevent him suffering any injuries or complications during his recovery process.  Zaback will enjoy his retirement with his handler Officer Bowe.

The La Crosse Police K9 Program is funded by generous donations from our community members.  We greatly appreciate the support we receive, but the contributions go towards maintaining and continued training for the department’s remaining four K9’s. Due to the unforeseen expense of this necessary surgery, we are reaching out to the public for financial assistance for Zaback’s surgery, recovery, and rehabilitation. Our current goal is to raise $3,500, which is the estimated cost of the procedure and Zaback’s aftercare that was given to us by UW Madison Veterinary Care.

We would like to thank Thompson’s Animal Center, UW Madison Veterinarian, Fun Fur pets, and Sparta vet clinic for already helping Zaback by donating rehab items and donating services.

Help Zaback get his legs back and enjoy his retirement.
