Gloria's Journey
Early in November 2021, mom started feeling extremely weak and tired and went to the hospital for testing. Throughout November and most of December she went for various tests and on Christmas Eve we received the devastating news that cancer cells were found. She had a few hospital stays in December and January. On January 19th we received the news that she was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, that there were no treatment options and that she had weeks to live. We were devastated and in shock. We tried our best to focus on the positive: we had an opportunity to spend some time with her before she passed. We were bound to make the most of it. For four weeks, we spent every day together baking, learning her recipes, watching movies and spending quality time together. One of her wishes was to stay at home as long as possible. Athabasca Home Care team did an amazing job supporting her and helped us to navigate supporting her medically and emotionally. As her condition progressed we looked for additional supports and found a new but hidden gem: Healing Hearts Inc out of Westlock.
From the moment we connected with them, we knew they were able to support mom and our family in the way we needed most. There was no other organization in the area that could do this work. Healing Hearts Inc had a team of compassionate nurses who were able to help mom with all her needs; administering medications, reassuring and comforting her. They supported us along the way with late night text responses letting us know how she was doing, information on what to expect and comforting us throughout her journey. Mom was able to comfortably stay home with us until 24 hours of her passing.
Words cannot express how thankful mom was for the compassionate, loving and kind support received from Kara and Hailee. Mom could see the relief on our faces to have experienced nurses taking care of her around the clock and help us through this difficult time. One of mom's last wishes was to have any donations received to be made in lieu to Healing Hearts Inc. Her hope was to raise awareness of this wonderful organization and to maybe help one person in our community receive the care they need. Just like we did. We are forever grateful for their service.
