Healing Graces for Val's Continued Recovery
Spende geschützt
It is with a tremendous amount of humility and Faith that I create this GoFundMe page for my son, Val Dia. My mission is to restore hope and provide the support needed to further his recovery & regain more of what was lost the night of July 6, 2019.
As many of you know, Val was a backseat passenger in a horrific car accident 2.5 years ago. The vehicle struck a cement center divider at 70+ mph, head on, no brakes until just before impact. The driver was ejected over the divider while the 3 seat belted passengers proceeded to flip downhill for a quarter of a mile until finally coming to a rest. First responders found them hanging upside down by their seatbelts- 2 not responsive, but all 3 alive. NOTHING but the Grace of God and His plan for these kids explains how they survived. Nothing else.
Here we are two and a half years later, just as grateful as that night he was spared, but so frustrated at the continuous uphill battle trying to find the support he needs to stay in the fight to progress not regress.
After completing a 3 month intensive driving program through St. Jude's Neurological Rehab Center, Val was finally allowed to drive again- easing in slowly over several months. The freedom allowed him to take a dog walking job from a good friend of his & he was so excited about this opportunity to make some money and feel like he could contribute.
Then the unthinkable happened on December 29th 2021. It was like being struck by lightening twice, down to the same road as the first accident. Val was driving to his dog walking job following a pretty decent rain storm for this area. He slid out on the slick road, managed to avoid other cars, crashed into the center divider, rolled and once again landed upside down hanging from his seatbelt.
And once again saved by a Miracle.
Val not only survived this accident, but was shown tremendous Grace once again.
Despite the impact, flipping of his truck & being at such high risk for brain hemorrhage, he did not sustain any significant physical injuries. His scans showed no new bleeds or fractures and he was discharged from the same trauma center, but this time, it did not include the long stay in the ICU.
God clearly has more in store for this beautiful soul.
I share the following not for sympathy but for transparency.
All resources to provide Val what he needs from here have been depleted. I have pulled every loan, liquidated life insurance, maxed care credit & maxed multiple credit cards. Medical, rehabilitation, legal fees for conservatorship and continued neuropsychological treatments from the first accident is where all of my resources have already been allocated.
Severe traumatic brain injury comes with..
- An exhaustive list of To Dos
- A gazillion checklists
- Then 2 years in, a pat on the back & a 'Good luck & don't forget to play on those brain stimulating games- see you in 6 months for bloodwork. Oh, don't be alarmed, but do prepare for early onset dementia, typically presenting late 20s/early 30s, as he is high risk due to the extent of his injuries.'

Traumatic brain injury does NOT stop healing unless you accept this 'new normal' & settle with surrender.
There is so much more healing to be done.
Science is science- results are results- and the data speaks for its self.
My hope for Val:
-An intensive 10 days at The Plasticity Center in Denver, CO- JAN 29 2022-FEB 12 2022.
-Secure an affordable place to stay in Denver; Plasticity Center is not an inpatient treatment center.
-Followed by 3 weeks back home implementing a new care plan and maintenance regime via PC
-Return to Plasticity Center for an additional 10 days focussed on the transition into a life with a plan/goals.
-Return home with support from a vocational counselor in addition to continued rehabilitation remotely through PC
-Secure the support of a specialized traumatic brain injury coach.

Plasticity Center does not take insurance, which is actually a positive in my opinion. This means they are not dictated or controlled by prior authorizations and formularies. They provide cutting-edge, data-driven, results-focussed, integrative treatment for the WHOLE patient. Neurological, metabolical & psychological. In contrast to the pharmaceutical focussed, outdated and not even TBI indicated drug therapies as our only 'in network' option at this point .
It is my honor & privilege to do all I can to offer Val the care he needs to support his continued recovery. Including the very hardest thing for me to do which is ask for help. Thank you.
And, THANK YOU for taking the time to read this and I do hope it raises some sort of awareness regarding TBI recovery and what is available to continue recovery.
Whether you are in a position to contribute or unable to do so, we are very grateful for all of you just the same.
Your continued prayers, grace & generosity are deeply appreciated.
Thank you again, Val will make you so very PROUD .
Love,
Carolyn & Val
