Help Marvin fight stage 4 cancer
Donation protected
Just over two months ago, one of the dearest people in our community was hospitalized for emergency abdominal surgery and on the same day of his five hour surgery he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. It was a one-two punch that has left him and his wife, along with all of us who know and love them, shocked.
Marvin and Erica have walked with us since the very beginning of our story (Erica has known me - Justin - since I was a child). They have been pillars of wisdom, support, and unconditional love. We know that we are one of many communities and two of hundreds, if not thousands of people, that have been deeply moved by their hearts of compassion and their acts of service.
Here’s the thing about Marvin -- he has always been the helper, the caregiver. Marvin dedicated over a decade of his life to providing 24 hour care for his son. His son who was born with severe medical issues and was told that he would never reach the age of 10. His son who -- with an all-encompassing worldview of medicine (including Chinese medicine), the all-encompassing care of his father, and the decades of unending support from the community in Marvin’s home country of Bermuda -- will turn 21 this month.
Marvin has the all-encompassing worldview of medical treatments. He has the all-encompassing care of his wife. And now we have the opportunity, and honor, to be his community of unending support; his Bermuda. Whether you know Marvin and Erica because you are a Bahai, or an Oregonian, or a classmate of his in Oriental med school (because being 70 years old isn’t stopping Marvin from learning), or any of the other places and spaces that they serve and love, we have a beautiful opportunity to come together and help lift a man who has helped all of us rise.
All of the financial donations will go towards Marvin’s cancer treatment costs, including travel costs, as his treatment is in Los Angeles and requires him to be there for almost a month at a time. As of now, his treatments alone cost them $5,000 per month. The exact number of treatments he will need is undetermined at this time. Prior to his diagnosis, Marvin planned to purchase a used RV so that he and Erica could travel around the country and experience the beauty of America. Now, he hopes he can purchase one as a means to save on travel and lodging costs when he goes for treatment.
We hope that the beauty of people coming together to love, pray for, and support a family that has done that for so many of us will be a catalyst for renewing and healing Marvin’s physical health. We believe in the power of community, the spirit of humanity, and are deeply grateful for any amount donated.
“Thy name is my healing, O my God, and remembrance of Thee is my remedy. Nearness to Thee is my hope, and love for Thee is my companion. Thy mercy to me is my healing and my succor in both this world and the world to come. Thou, verily, art the All-Bountiful, the All-Knowing, the All-wise.” -- Bahá’u’lláh
Love Always,
