Since working in Afghanistan many years, we do not get to see our children very often. So, we were finally together in July 2017. Len and I visited the USA - but in mid-July, Len got suddenly VERY sick. He had fevers, chills, shaking, and soon after he went to the ER at Woodland Hospital, CA . Overnight they did a spinal tap, blood cultures, other lab tests, and x-rays.
In the end we found out he had a RARE bacterial infection in his bladder, that spread to his kidneys, and then into his blood stream! He was septic, and very ill, and was admitted, put into isolation for several days in the hospital. He was treated with 2 different IV antibiotics, and also treated for a recurrence of malaria.
After multiple claims, emails and phone calls to our medical insurance company, we have come to discover our insurance (mainly for overseas) only covers us the first 14 days we are in the USA - and then, only if we need emergency care. Len got sick last year, on day 16 of our trip to the USA - and onward. He then had two weeks of outpatient IV antibiotic treatments, once he was discharged.
The final decision from the insurance company is NO COVERAGE at all because Len's illness started on day 16. Bills from the ER, doctors and hospital total $61,000. We have started to pay some on these bills, but the hospital bill alone is over $53,000. We cannot afford the total monthly payments that are being requested of us (about $1000/month).
Because this had dragged out to one year already, and the majority of the bills are not yet paid, there is an urgency to get larger amounts paid on these bills. Any donations you can help us with, is most appreciated!
Thank you, sincerely -
Len and Diane
