Healing for Kayla

Introduction
The week after her 18th birthday and her highschool graduation, Makayla Keller was in a terrible car accident. We are raising funds for her medical care and (hopefully) a replacement car.

Makayla
On June 13, 2018, Makayla celebrated her 18th birthday, thengraduated from Freeman High School on the 14th. She celebrated at a party with family and friends, spending time looking at childhood photos, and going to the movies. After saving up for two years, she finally purchased a car in April 2018 (a green Honda Accord). She was recently promoted to a new position at Chick-Fil-A, where she planned to work full time over the summer before starting classes at a community college. She is beautiful and strong, stubborn and sassy, outgoing and funny. She loves her friends and family more than anything in the world.

The accident
Kayla was on her way back from a catering job, driving on I-95 in downtown Richmond. She changed lanes with items in the backseat partially blocking her blindspot, side swiped a car, overcorrected, and hit a guardrail, then a semi. truck. Her car was crushed and first responders extracted her from the car using the jaws of life. Medical professionals who saw the damage to the car were surprised that she survived.

The damage
Miraculously, Kayla’s brain and spine did not have any damage, but she did break her femur, shoulder, collarbone, and two ribs. She is awake, aware of everything, but in pain. Her ear was cut nearly in half from tip to base. She suffered serious lacerations on her skull, jaw, shoulder, wrist, hip, arm, with dozens of smaller cuts from the glass. She has had an operation to insert a metal rod to repair her femur and another to put a rod in her shoulder/collarbone and to repair the torn ligaments in that area.

The cost
Makayla will need to move from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility, followed by additional recovery time at home, with out-of-pocket costs of at least $10,000. We are hoping to raise enough for the medical bills, with any additional funds to go towards replacing her car.

Thank you to everyone who has helped so far! Every visit, call, and text means the world to us. We have been reading everything to Kayla, and she is overwhelmed by your support.
