Update on Dad:
To our wonderful friends and family, thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts for everything you have given. It helps more than you know and means the world to us.

On May 13th we got the call from mom, "something isn't right with your dad. I need you down here. The ambulance is on the way." So, back to Piedmont we went. When I got there a doctor pulled me aside and said, "things aren't good. If there is anyone who needs to be here call them now." So at that time I called Jessica who had her parents on stand-by to keep Jack. Things just seemed to get worse and worse. Dad was completely unresponsive. Mom was hysterical and hyperventilating and she just kept saying "come on Harvey, wake up Harvey, don't leave me Harvey!" After 9 hours in the emergency room a room in ICU finally opened up. Dad was still unresponsive. Several hours and many visitors later I decided I was going to take matters into my own hands to get dad to wake up. I pressed hard on his collar bone causing him to wake up! However he was so confused he did not recognize anyone. After awhile he became more and more like himself. At one point after not recognizing anyone, Lena asked him, "who loves you?" And his response: "Kathy loves me." He was coming back to us! We all breathed a sigh of relief and things seemed, although still bad, like a huge weight was lifted off.

Dad stayed in ICU for a few more days until he was able to come off of the IV blood pressure medicine. Doctors finally gave us some sort of answers- the infection had spread to the bone and now he needed a colostomy in order to remove the infection. On May 18th, dad finally was well enough for the surgery. It went well and doctors anticipated about a 3-4 day recovery in the hospital before going home. Things seemed to be looking up and ok. On Monday, May 23rd his blood pressure plummeted again 77/54! Not going home anytime soon! Doctors tried to tell mom they would send him home on oral antibiotics. Nope! That was not going to work. We do not want to end up right where we started-the emergency room.

We are trying to get Dad well enough to have his second surgery. The skin graft will be a much more complicated surgery. This surgery will have at least a month recovery time in the hospital and then another two months bed rest once home. This is very depressing to dad. He feels like "he is never leaving the hospital again." This is so heartbreaking to all of us because we need him to fight! To want to fight! Now we are just looking for answers. WHY can't he keep his blood pressure up? WHY is he so confused? WHY is he so weak? He's dehydrated even after being on fluids all this time. No doctor can give us any answers. WHY is he still in the hospital and not at home!?

This has taken so much of a toll on Mom. I know a lot of you keep up through the Facebook posts, but hearing her cries and seeing her heartbreaking everyday is just as hard as dealing with what Dad is going through. The medical bills are starting to pile in, the vacation time is starting to run out and she just doesn't know what she is going to do. She misses her husband and just wants him back to the way he was before all of this. She misses her grandkids. She misses their life.

We hope that reading this will help everyone understand a little more of what's been going on the last few weeks. It's been the most trying time our family has ever faced. All we can really do now is keep praying and keep on praying. All the visits from everyone have also lifted Dad's spirits. Thank you all for that. The donations already given have been so wonderful. We only can ask that you continue to share this page as much as possible to continue to pass the word around. These are two of the most deserving people in the world and whatever can be given will be well received and used to help with Dad's medical expenses and Mom's time off of work (which is about to run out).

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read this and for your consideration for our family.

Love,
Zach and Jessica, Lena and Alec.
