Healing for Evan
Donation protected
Hi world! My name is Jess, and I, alongside Eric, Satarius and a huge community of Evan and Alison Beier's friends and loved ones have created this campaign to create financial well-being for the Beier family.
Evan was born, in 2009, with kidney failure and multiple medical complexities. At 7 days old, weighing only 3 lbs, he underwent his first surgery, a dialysis catheter placement. He'd start dialysis treatments three weeks later, just 30 days after he was born. Evan went home from the hospital for the very first time, when he was 5 months old.
Evan's mother Alison was told by doctors that he wouldn’t live 24 hours. He was born with a collapsed left lung and a malformed right lung and was placed on the highest levels of pressurized oxygen, with the ventilator being the next level of support. The doctors told Alison, if Evan required the ventilator, their recommendation was to stop providing care and let him die peacefully. Overnight, Evan's collapsed lung healed itself without medical intervention; four days later, he was breathing room air.
Today, Evan is 13 years old.
From 2009 - 2012, Alison drove Evan to the hospital every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday for 4-hour hemodialysis treatments. Most of Evan's life was lived in the hospital, during dialysis or throughout his many surgeries and hospitalizations. Evan's had over 70 surgical procedures.
Evan celebrated his first birthday with family at the hospital, and even some holidays. Alison embraced the idea that life is lived right where we are; and, Evan's childhood, although often confined to the four walls of a hospital room, was and is always full of love, joy, and magic.
In 2012, Evan received his first kidney transplant - donated by Alison herself. A year and a half later, the ailing organ would be removed and replaced by a kidney donated by Alison’s cousin, Monica. That kidney, lovingly regarded as "Little Murph," has been with Evan for over nine years.
Since Little Murph, Evan became a big brother. He attends school with his peers, plays sports, loves video games, and has visited six presidential libraries; the man is a president aficionado. Evan also has monthly infusions, visits to the ER, and hospital stays, from time to time.
At the end of January this year, Evan ended up in the Emergency Department at UCLA Medical Center in agonizing pain, with a fever of 105.2. He was diagnosed with septic arthritis, an infection in his hip and bloodstream. He underwent an emergency open surgical procedure and was in the hospital for two weeks.
Once home, Evan began complaining of back pain and had a challenging time breathing. Three days later, he was admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Evan had bilateral pleural effusions; his lymphatic system was leaking around his lungs. He needed two tubes inserted into each side of his chest to drain the fluid. Unable to breathe on his own, he spent days on a ventilator and four weeks in the ICU on respiratory support.
He has remained in the hospital ever since.
Spending over a month in a PICU comes at a steep price and that is why we are creating this campaign. Alison Beier has and continues to touch MANY lives and this is an opportunity to contribute to her and her well-being the way she has contributed to many of us.
Any monetary donation you could spare would go a long way in helping Alison and her family. Your contribution will help:
- Pay off some of the medical debt
- Fund the expensive road to recovery
- Help meet immediate family needs including monthly bills
- Pay ongoing extra expenses accumulated while Evan and Alison are at the hospital full-time (parking, takeout food, etc).
- Cover interruptions to Alison's income while being in the hospital.
Please donate whatever you’re comfortable giving to help this amazing family in their moment of need. Thank you all for your contribution!
