Biscuit came into my care on the evening of August 20th. She comes from a large flock in desperate need of relocation to adopters and emergency fosters. She has been grounded since at least the 30th of July, and for this reason has been on my mind. Much to my relief, when I offered to take the highest-need birds to heal up and then transfer to local fosters, she was one of the birds transferred to me. Biscuit will not be transferred any time soon, as she, in addition to being grounded, is low activity, quite underweight despite a good appetite, and has a firm abdominal distention. I took a fecal soon after her arrival and found, despite a recent deworming, a large number of capillaria ova. After discussing with some rehabber friends, the consensus was that it was better to bring her directly to a vet than to try to start her care independently (a decision that I don't regret). She saw a vet on the 23rd. Her ultrasound was inconclusive, but showed what the vet described as "angry guts." The ultrasound was suggestive of possible cancer or reproductive disease, but as the lower GI tract upset was absolutely certain, we decided to start her treatment with a course of antibiotics and a dewormer to specifically target the capillaria. If, after 7 to 10 days, she has not improve, we will have a recheck and discuss further diagnostic options.
In the meantime, she has married another one of my fosters from that flock, a handsome pigeon named Marble. He is perfectly happy to stay on the ground with her and they have claimed a big box to snuggle in.
Her vet bills thus far have reached $500. To allow fundraising for her flock to be focused on aviary construction to get more birds out of their current conditions as soon as possible, I have decided to fundraise for her medical expenses separately.
I am very optimistic for Biscuit's future, and I am hoping to make updates on this fundraiser fun and interesting. My goal is to allow donors to take part in Biscuit's healing and the recovery of her three flock mates in my care (they are in need of some serious TLC and some microscope fun-time powered parasite control themselves). Future updates will range from highly care-centric to cute pigeons just being cute.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope that we can make Biscuit's story a shared success. She's a cute little bird.
