Healin that broke leg, and raising money fo kids

Evan here, your friendly resident Barkeep. Those of you that know me know I strive to stay as active as possible. For those I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, most of my time not spent managing a beautiful bar is spent on a bicycle. Over the years I have done century rides like Seattle to Portland, Criterium races, and logged thousands of miles through the streets of Atlanta.

My bike is my home.

On July 2nd, 2019 poor road conditions provoked an accident that totaled my bike and threw me against a curb. I suffered a compound fracture in my right femur -- the hardest bone in the body to break. Thankfully the wonderful group in my regular 6am ride was able to get me into an ambulance and send me to Grady for the necessary surgery.

After 5 hours under the knife I woke to 4 pins above my right knee, which holds a rod in place that stabilizes my femur. The pins and rod are permanent; I will not be able to walk without them again.

I’m very lucky on multiple levels, and thankful for the incredible support I’ve received from work, friends, family, and regulars. You all have been amazing.

Unfortunately, I was out of work for two months to heal and convalesce. While I do have insurance, my out-of-pocket owed to the many service providers, as well as physical therapy (that, unfortunately was not completely covered by my insurance provider), and miscellaneous expenses incurred from the injury, my expenses now exceed $10k.

This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced, and I don’t just mean the healing process. Reaching out and asking for help can be even harder in it’s own way, but I feel a bit stronger every day, and have come to realize that asking for help is the next step to getting back on my feet.

After my bills have been covered, any additional funds will be donated to one of two organizations near and dear to my heart:

Wholesome Wave, (https://www.wholesomewavegeorgia.org/), and No Kid Hungry (https://www.nokidhungry.org).  Both organizations provide outreach to folks in need of healthy food options.

On top of donating any additional funds that are donated to me, I will be using whatever support and sponsorship I receive to give back to the community. Once I receive clearance from my doctor I will begin training for Chef’s Cycle, a No Kid Hungry-sponsored endurance group ride, which will take place in Bend, OR in 2020. This will be the first sponsored event I will be participating in to raise money and awareness for those in need since my injury, and I look forward to building on this momentum in the future.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate your consideration. Every little bit helps!
