Coastal communities in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea, are suffering in silence. Since the first fish kill late last year, KafKaf village has experienced devastating effects on both ocean and human health.

Elders and youth are getting sick when they go into the ocean, suffering from painful skin welts, rashes, and severe itchiness. The community can no longer fish, paddle, or practice their customary activities, which are vital to their culture and survival.

Despite the severity of the crisis, the government has not provided disaster relief. No one has supplied continuous food, water, medicine, or other essential supplies to the most affected communities. Instead, the government is giving false hope about processing water samples from the toxic site and is even censoring locals, telling them not to document or share what is happening. This is a fundamental human rights issue that goes beyond ocean conservation, as children’s lives and village livelihoods are at stake.

Right now, the communities are running out of food and water. Through the support of Ailan Awareness, led by John Aini, and with the help of the InnerLight Foundation, we can take action. By distributing water tanks, food, medicine, educational materials, and citizen science tools, we can give these communities a chance. Funds will also support water quality testing, community education, and the documentation of this crisis, empowering locals to find solutions and protect their future.
