Hey there, everyone! My name is Morgan. I created Western North Carolina's 1st female-owned comics and collectibles shop. I've had the same location for the past 7 years in West Asheville. In that time I've gotten to watch your kids grow up and move away to college and hear about their adventures when they've come to visit home. I've gotten to sell the very first comic or nerd toy to your kids who didn't even exist yet when the store first opened in 2015. I've hosted engagement parties for couples who've met in this "Nerd Sanctuary". And I even hosted memorials for customers who are no longer with us.
I've always had my top 3 role-models to help guide me through decisions: Mr. Rogers, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Wonder Woman and along with my own heart and wide ranging experiences (& a small team of some of the most amazing employees and friends) we've maintained the top rating for comics and collectibles shops in Western North Carolina.
So that gives those who don't know us, yet, a bit of our story and I'll go ahead and get to the point of this GoFundMe.
Though there are a slew of honest hardworking and uniquely incredible small local businesses and a warm neighborly community of citizens here sometimes change is necessary to help nudge progress in the most beneficial direction and especially in the time since the beginning of the 2020 pandemic.
We at Morgan's Comics have reached a point where we feel that our circle of regulars and visitors has grown to an extent where it would be the next proper step to be in a larger location. As well as a huge help to West Asheville for us to utilize my decades of experience with art galleries and theatre to expand to a larger location where we can host small LLC's, sole proprietors and independent persons interested in reaching a larger audience/ growing their clientele.
Many of you saw our recent social media posts on Instagram and Facebook &/or the coverage graciously offered by News 13 WLOS that our "Nerd Sanctuary", Morgan's Comics, was burglarized on the 2nd of February at a cost of multiple felony level thousands of dollars in merchandise.
You can read on any of these sites how emotional the ramifications of this have been for us all as a family... and as a neighborhood.
Part of the merchandise stolen was my personal laptop with all of the grant documentation and proposal work I was in the process of organizing (as well as the only copy of a comic book I've been writing for 3 years). This and the thousands of dollars worth of merchandise (which you can see being taken in the posted video footage) have set us back in renting the building we are aiming for for the local West Asheville Art Gallery and Performance Space. Giving your support to us expanding to a larger or second space we will be able to offer 3+ more full-time jobs to our community and in our larger space we can offer seating to visitors (with mocktails, and coffee, folks can visit the craft beer store next door) while their kids play at our variety of quite successful event nights, watch theater performances, play trivia, check out (a much larger array than can currently be carried at our primary location) visual artists booths. Support what makes Asheville what it is. Celebrate the creativity of our local artists of all kinds.
Considering or even in spite of the robbery we feel that the time to create this space of hope for the area to build themselves back up (in a healthy, not pandering or catering to way) is certainly upon us. We are asking that anyone able to help us re-stabilize from the financial hardship put on us by these thieves help us recoup and anyone with the means, please, answer our call to action.
Don't just imagine how much better for the neighborhood this could be, believe in it and contribute to our efforts to make it happen. We have the reputation, the connections, the passion, the experience and the creative spirit that it will take to make this for us all.
Thank you for reading about our mission and also of our recent heartbreak. As a longtime customer of Morgan's Comics said Saturday, "When you hurt the Nerd Sanctuary you hurt all of us."
