With heartfelt gratitude,

on April 5, I got off work and went home to relax on a Friday night. I put on my pajamas, grabbed my crochet hook, and I was gonna go to town being an old lady. Dressed in pajama pants and an oversized sweater purchased on Temu, I reached over a Bath and body Works candle in my bathroom. By the time I felt pain/heat, I was ON FIRE. The right sleeve of the sweater was aflame, so I reacted and started started hitting it with my left hand. Quickly realizing and sitting off a panic, I realize that every time I hit it, the flame moved upward into my armpit and right torso area. I screamed. I tried to start taking the sweater off. The sweater began sticking to me. my mother heard me yell from the kitchen and ran into The bathroom to find me on the floor, trying to smother it and take it off at the same time. It just kept sticking and burning. She turned the sink on and tried to throw water all over me, even using the candle jar as a container to throw water. This is where my brain begins protecting itself. Eventually, I was out, The fire department arrived, and I was transported to level one trauma in downtown Austin.
Today is April 29, 2024. It is my 24th day in ICU. I have had nine surgeries, eight blood transfusions, and still awaiting skin grafts. I have not put out any formal announcements on my social media because I am a proud and private person. At the requests of friends and family, amazing coworkers, and looking at a long-term view of what is to come in recovering, is very apparent that I will need some financial help For both my living, medical, and recovery expenses. I absolutely love my work and my job, but I do work for a small company and I do not have short term/long-term disability benefits, and I have gone through all of my PTO as of this week.
I am waiting for my wounds to become at the perfect stage for accepting skin grafts, and the burn team has not given me a timeline for when I will be discharged from the hospital and able to return to any kind of work. I will be adding updates to this post as I am in a better place to communicate them. I am in awe Of all of my friends, family, and coworkers who have been texting and sending their words of support. I ask humbly, if you cannot donate to please share this post. I am humbled every day. I am in this intensive care unit, seeing other people who are way worse off than I. I am lucky, but my world has been turned upside down. I am focusing on remaining resilient and keeping my headspace strong.
