Opening in June 2022, Headrest Barber Business Academy(HBBA) is the new premiere barber college in downtown Chicago, Illinois! Here, our first priority is ensuring students become well-versed qualified professional barbers. Distinguished from other barber training programs, Headrest Business Barber Academy also aims to expose students to the foundational principles for financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and servant leadership. Our overall goal is for our students to obtain the tools and resources to prepare them for sustained success, which will permeate and influence the clients and the communities they will eventually serve.
The C.E.O., Raynie Jackson has 30 years in the barber service industry. As the current owner of Headrest Barbershop (HB), located in the heart of Chicago Loop on the first floor of the Congress Hotel on South Michigan, Raynie has an “insider point of view” of the clientele from all walks of life and lifestyles—i.e., race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation—in Chicago and the West, North, East and South regions of the Globe! Historically speaking, Mr. Jackson was one of the first black entrepreneur barbers in the Chicago Loop area. Mr. Jackson has a long history of catering to professional men and women in a friendly and upscale safe space right in the heart of Chi-Town.
The idea of opening a barber college has been an aspiration for the last ten years. However, Mr. Jackson needed to get his Illinois credentials as a Master Teacher and Instructor in order to make it a reality. That goal was achieved in June 2019 from Mario Tricoci University of Beauty Culture. Immediately, he escalated his plans to secure funding for the barber academy with a burgeoning approach of the state’s mandated curriculum on three different levels: Level 1 Standard Barbering Program (1500 hours), Level 2 Barber/ Stylist (1575 hours), and Level 3 Master Stylist/Instructor (approximately 1000 hours). Level 3 includes a renewed focus that reconstructs the barbering service industry in two ways: (1) to integrate financial literacy, investment and retirement topics and (2) to focus on the health patterns and eating habits within the community that lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancers. This new awareness sets forth the social determinants of how to bring the barbering service industry into the communities amid the given crises-The COVID 19 pandemic, exploding deaths of black and brown populations, massive layoffs, as well as the geo-political and socio-economic changes in major urban cities. This will be a new paradigmatic shift on how to integrate a service industry to be a model for 21st century change.
The appeal of HBBA will be a “behind the chair” philosophical approach that embraces old-school barbering: (1) to build relationships, (2) to provide exceptional customer service, and (3) to pamper its clientele across different genders and orientations. This is done using our marketing brand that embraces two overlooked areas in the barbering communities: financial planning and issues related to health and wellness. The overarching goal of the HBBA is not only going to provide the basic state-mandated curriculum. It will include two neglected segments:
The first segment will teach the intricate skills of the barbering service industry which will be divided into three levels: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.
The second segment will bring awareness and knowledge about financial education and how it shapes cost-effective financial planning and behavior toward asset accumulation.
The last segment will include curriculum centered around health and wellness. Our purpose is to educate the community about the health disparities that have gone undiagnosed or addressed—(e.g., diabetes, cancers, heart disease) no matter the gender or orientation.
For the first 2yrs the school is open, students won't be eligible for financial aid and will have to take out loans or pay out of pocket. In those first 2yrs, we would like to relieve students' financial burden, until we get accredited and students can qualify for financial aid. All donations will go to the students to assist with paying for their tuition and all associated school needs. We would appreciate the generous support from our community to offer our barber scholars a top-notch education of classroom theory, hands-on instruction, and skills practice. Our immediate goal is to secure monetary and tangible donations of any size that can lead to the acquisition of school supplies, technology, cleaning supplies, student uniforms, barber towels/ equipment, furniture, and student scholarships. No donation is too small or too large.
We hope we can count on you to support. All of us at Headrest Barber Business Academy want to thank you in advance for your contribution. If you would like to speak with someone regarding enrollment and/or donations please contact Raynie Jackson or Don Jones for further assistance.
Sincerely,
Raynie Jackson, CEO [email redacted]
