Denise's Head Scarves For Hope

December 28th, 2020 is a day I will never forget. My entire world turned upside down when I heard four sobering words, “you have breast cancer”. I thought this must be a mistake.
I had read that 8 out of 10 “breast lumps” were benign. There was no history of breast cancer in my family and I don’t fit any of the typical risk factors. However, I have since learned that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their life. The American Cancer Society estimates that 325,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 and I was one of them.
A breast cancer diagnosis? I truly believe that in life, everything happens for a reason and hope to turn this negative truth into a positive one. The love and support from family and friends has been amazing. I have a wonderful support system and access to excellent care. I try to remind myself of these things on days when I’m feeling overwhelmed.
As I begin my breast cancer journey, I’m reminded that I am not alone; I think about all of the women newly diagnosed, without the financial means or emotional support and the need to help them through their health challenges. In my travels, I connected with Betty Fimbel, a cancer survivor whose illness put her on an altruistic path of creating, producing and selling head coverings for women and children with hair loss. Called Inspirational Head Coverings, Betty’s is a small business that was started to satisfy a large need. Its’ mission is to give back to the cancer community by donating a percentage of its’ profits as well as donating head scarves to those in need. This resonated with me as I too, would like to do my part for the cancer community.
I am now losing my hair due to chemo. One of my biggest cancer treatment fears has become a reality. In spite of knowing that hair loss is temporary, losing one’s hair during chemo destroys one’s self esteem, an essential part of maintaining a positive attitude which is vital during treatment.
When I received my head covers I purchased from Betty, I felt a sigh of relief. Just putting on the head scarf lifted my spirits and warmed my soul. It was then that I decided to help other women undergoing breast cancer treatment, by donating quality head scarves to those losing their hair. I reached out to Betty Fimbel and we will now be partnering on this mission.
My goal is to raise $3,000 and to use these funds to purchase head coverings for women like Betty and I, cancer patients who lost their hair during chemo treatment. She has agreed to do a matching donation of one head scarf for each one purchased. Every $1,000 raised will help 100 women. While I know this may not seem like a lot, for each of these women, it is my firm belief the gesture will help these women feel as though they are not alone. The head scarves purchased will be donated to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Commack, New York.
Every donation can and will make a difference!
Thank you!
