To our friends and family from John and Donna
Before we left on our holiday to St. Lucia John reached out to the hotel and asked what charity might benefit from us bringing children's clothes and other items. They immedately put John in touch with the Salvation Army, operating in a poor section of the town closest to our resort.
John and Captain Derrick started a conversation and before we knew it we were loaded up with basic school supplies, clothes...and a printer cartridge. The Salvation Army school makes a lot of their own teaching materials and they had not been able to afford a printer cartridge to print the children's workbooks for nearly a year!
Captain Derrick warmly invited us to visit the school so he could show us around and introduce us to the teachers and children.
We were nearly in tears (yes, even John) at the beautiful work they are doing. This school is a lifesaver for children from infancy to age 5. Captain Derrick explained that the parents (often single moms) of children in that age range aren't able to go to work because they are the primary caregivers. This creates a cycle of poverty.
Captain Derrick had the idea of taking these children into a day program and caring for them so the moms could work and the kids could get a great head start in life.
Derrick's wife, Captain Sandra, runs the children's school.
The program provides two meals a day to the children, cribs, diapers, uniforms (a standard in St. Lucia), reading and writing supplies, play time and lots and lots of love!
We were worried when we learned the toilet is on its last legs and keeping the feeding program going is always a challenge.
This work is amazing and we would like to ask you to join us in supporting Captain Derrick and his tiny amazing team of caring support staff.
$10,000 would allow Captains Derrick and Sandra to keep looking after "their" kids and give them the head start they need to build a bright future for themselves.
Your kind donation really will make a huge difference in these precious little lives! We saw the work ourselves.
Thanks so much from the bottom of our hearts...
John and Donna
P.S. Unfortunately your donation won't qualify for a Canadian charitable tax receipt as this is an international charity, registered in St. Lucia, not Canada.
