Please help 6mo Emily get a Plagiocephaly helmet

Meet my daughter Emily! Emily was born with plagiocephaly, a condition where the soft bones in her infant skull are misshapen. Though common forms of plagiocephaly are caused by repeated pressure after birth, Emily was born with plagiocephaly and thus the condition occurred at the very delicate stage of her development. Though we have sought lesser treatment measures recommended by our wonderful pediatricians, Emily’s condition is unchanged since birth.
Why this is critical?
Emily's plagiocephaly is diagnosed as mid-severe. If her head shape is not corrected in a timely manner she is at risk of developmental, neurological, or psychological difficulties. The pressure on the brain could possibly result in seizures.
How critical is the timeline?
Emily’s doctor recommended correction for Emily’s condition begin immediately. Infants experience high success in correction of this condition when treatment is begun in the 6-9 month age range. After this time frame, treatment is more difficult and the risk of permanent complications increases.
Emily’s Current Needs:
Emily had her second evaluation appointment with a specialist on October 4, 2019. Both specialists have agreed that Emily’s condition requires correction by a helmet. The cost associated with her needs would depend on which of the two specialists provide treatment:
- Specialist 1: $500 fee to take a digital scan of the current shape of Emily’s head, plus $2000 for the specially designed helmet.
- Specialist 2: $3000 -$3500 for both the scan and helmet (I’m still waiting for the exact cost from this facility)
With these costs in mind, we’ve set up Emily’s fund raiser amount at $3000. Emily's next appointment is scheduled on 10/15 at which time we'll need at least $500 for the scan fee. Images from our doctor appointment are shown below.
A Little Backstory on why this is a burden for us.
Our family has insurance, but the deductible just rolled over this past September. Because this is a medical device and not a regular appointment, our insurance will not cover any costs until a $4000 out-of-pocket deductible is met. We’re a hardworking, tax paying family of four just trying to make a better life for our children than we had. We’ve typically lived on the poverty line and this unexpected need has pushed us into scary territory. We do not blow our money on the latest and greatest, just do what we can to get by. When our family had difficulty with the $500 fee for Emily’s head scan and we had to push Emily’s appointment back, our doctor suggested we try a campaign here. So here we are. Emily is such a sweet little angel, absolutely just the best baby ever with a wonderful laugh and the loudest screech of joy you've ever heard. Please help us give her the perfect head she deserves.
