Simba's road to recovery

My boy Simba is in pain, we don’t know how he hurt himself, but after many veterinary visits and multiple X-rays, we were able to determine that he has a fracture in one of his vertebrae… the next step in his treatment is taking him to a neurologist so they can do an MRI, which can cost up to $3000 just for the scan. Unfortunately, we did not have pet health insurance for Simba and are paying for everything out of pocket, his vet explained to us that after the MRI they will have a better understanding of what to do next and that he may need surgery which can cost at least $5000.

For those who don’t know, Simba is a 6-year-old German Shepherd and was my working dog. We worked at the University of Maryland Medical Center as part of their K9 department and helped keep the medical staff safe and secure. Simba loved his job and would look forward to going to work. He was loved by all the medical staff at the hospital and was always looking for a chance to protect and serve. Simba retired last year, to enjoy his life as a regular dog, take long naps, go on hikes and play his all-time favorite game in the world “fetch”. If it’s not bad guys it’s his ball! All of this had to come to an abrupt end because of his injury. Simba can barely walk without pain now and spends most of the day just laying around looking like a sad pupper.

I regret the fact that we never purchased pet insurance for Simba and if I could turn back time that’s the first thing I would do for him so we wouldn’t be in this situation.
