On April 15 2023 a brutal war erupted in Khartoum, Sudan. Now recognised as the world's "worst humanitarian crisis" and the "forgotten war", it has displaced over 13 million people and more than 25 million people face acute hunger. More than half of those suffering are children.
Zaher was just nine years old when the war began.
He and his mother were unable to flee Khartoum and remained trapped in the city for over two years as fighting raged around them. In February 2024 Zaher was severely injured in a drone strike. After hours of unimaginable pain, he reached a hospital - only for doctors to deliver devastating news: both his legs had to be amputated just below the knee.
The BBC later shared Zaher's story with the world, and his quiet courage - and simple dream - touched hearts across the globe.
Now 12 years old, Zaher dreams of walking again.
The Khartoum Relief Group (KRG) is fundraising to get Zaher the urgent medical care he needs. With hospitals across Sudan ransacked and non-functional, and with virtually no prosthetic or rehabilitation services available in the country, our goal is to bring Zaher and his family to Egypt, where he can receive:
- Advanced medical treatment
- Physical rehabilitation
- Fitting for prosthetic legs
When asked by the BBC what he hoped for, Zaher said simply: "I wish I could have prosthetic legs so I can play football with my friends like I used to. That's all'.
Please help us make that dream a reality.
All proceeds will go directly towards getting Zaher the medical treatment he deserves and supporting his family throughout his recovery in Egypt. Any excess will go towards buying supplies for the school that Zaher attends.
Every donation brings Zaher one step closer to walking - and playing - again.
