Running for Emma

In October myself and my husband will both be running the Bournemouth half marathon. Our two girls are running in children's events too. As a family, we would like to raise as much money as possible for our dear friend Emma, who I first met at university, aged 18.

In 2016 Emma was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and since then has become completely paralysed, depending on 24/7 nursing care to carry out her everyday needs. Emma is fully ventilated, which means that she relies on a machine to breathe for her. Emma lives at home in a fully adapted bungalow with her mum and mischievous dog Maisy.

Prior to her illness, Emma realised her dream of becoming a consultant anaesthetist and intensivist, working in several hospitals across the south of England, helping countless patients and their families through the most difficult periods of their lives. As well as this, Emma was passionate about travel, photography and outdoor sports such as skiing and running. Many years ago Emma and I ran the London marathon together and we both share memories of trips around the world.

MND means that Emma can no longer able to pursue these passions and dreams. Despite this, Emma is trying her hardest to live life to its fullest- she is one of the strongest and bravest people I know.

I would love for Emma to have a some funds so that she can have some memorable days out or even days away. Her medical needs means trips out carry additional cost. To make this possible, we need to raise money to cover extra nurses and carers, insurance and medical equipment rental.
