Support a Center for Womxn Creatives

Donation protected
Dear Family, Friends, and Community,

We are very happy to announce a new collective of emerging artists located in downtown Ashland, Oregon, and would love to share our vision and hopes for our new studio space but most importantly we want to ask for your support in order to sustain our work and space.

Manya, Erica, and Maytal have created a collective of artists who support the creativity and empowerment of womxn*-of-color artists in the Rogue Valley. Our mission is to nurture and empower artists so we can collaborate, play/work, discuss, explore the intersection of Art, Literature, Activism and Sisterhood (ALAS).

The studio-space will provide a center where the exchange of knowledge can take place through the offering of community workshops, hosting open-mic nights, showcasing local artists’ work, and sharing insight and resources as we activate the vision of creating collectively!

WE BELIEVE THAT PERSONAL EXPRESSION THROUGH COLLECTIVE WORK CREATES A POSITIVE IMPACT AND MAKES OUR COMMUNITY STRONGER.

Why is this important for our community?

As womxn* creatives it is important to speak out as other womxn around the world are speaking up about their experience with inequality and injustice. They are raising their voices to make a difference. We are inviting our family, friends, and community to help us get this space up and running. With a little help, we will be able to build a space that helps local artists get their voices heard. A space that promotes our art, poetry, writing, and creative projects which will engage the youth and the community in our local area. It is important for us to bring in womxn of all ages to learn together and mentor one another.

We would like everyone to attend our events and participate in activities/workshops, but our intention is to focus on and prioritize our BIPOC communities so they have access to resources. The majority of the art and cultural spaces in our area do not represent BIPOC, which is why our mission is to create this space lead by BIPOC people in our community. It is not only necessary, but vital, to continue to diversify the conversation, art, and culture in the Rogue Valley.

*BIPOC ---Black, Indigenous, People of Color*
*womxn -- Includes AFABS (assigned female at birth), trans women, or any femme in between :)

Goal: monthly gallery art show with local and state-wide artists. 2-3 workshops, open studio hours/office hours.

What support is needed?

We are asking for donations of $5 or more that will go towards the materials/equipment, and rent. Manya, Erica, and Maytal are volunteering to make this happen. We are using our own resources to start this because we believe in its importance for our community, to uplift, and learn/build together. Below you can find information on the coordinators and a list of materials/equipment we need.

We will be hosting a gallery show on February 7th, 2020---5pm-8pm, come check out the space and meet us!

THANK YOU FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO READ ABOUT OUR COLLECTIVE.

About The Creatives

Manya Yana Campos is a queer xicana mama, poet and essayist. She grew up traveling between her ancestral home in Mexico, the redwoods of Northern California, and the perfumed streets of South India. Her work explores cultural and queer identity, ancestral healing, and critically examines the impact of colonialism. She has been published in numerous feminist journals and her latest chapbook a look of defiance. radiant. is available at Bloomsbury Books where she frequently holds community readings. Manya received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Southern Oregon University.

Erica Alexia a Xicana born and raised in Southern Oregon with ancestral roots in México. She is a visual artist, storyteller,  youth mentor, and community organizer. Erica’s work centers visual art and culture to build community. In 2018, Erica co-founded a project called Noche de cuentos, which works with the Latinx community to craft and share their story. This year, Erica has partnered up with The Hearth, becoming the director of a Latinx Story Project. She believes in the power of telling and reclaiming our stories as a means of remembering and spiritual healing. Erica received three Bachelor’s Degrees in Ethnic Studies, Cultural Anthropology and Spanish from the University of Oregon. But she would say that a lot of her experience comes from being chismosa and curious.
Erica has presented and facilitated multiple workshops with youth at SOU, RCC, and at the womens progessional conference: Womens Leaderhip Conference.

Maytal is a Xicana artist born in La Habra, California. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Emerging Media and Digital Arts, with a minor in Fine Art from Southern Oregon University. She is a Graphic Designer for a local start-up company as well as a freelance photographer. Her intention for the Alas Collective is to showcase visibility as a Latinx artist, hoping to help and collaborate with others in the rogue valley.
