HC Breast Cancer Journey

On 10/10/19 I was given the diagnosis that you never expect or want to receive. I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Hearing this news changes your life forever. I was standing at the gates of a challenge I had never seen before…a fight for my life. In a split second I began to experience every emotion all at once. Fear, Anger, Denial…the list goes on. Would I be able to take care of my 3 small children, would I be able to work, will I be able to beat this…everything down to the little things…am I going to lose my hair? Silly, I know, but it’s all real. I’ve learned it’s not just about me. This disease impacts the entire family.
I was diagnosed as Stage 3. In addition to having cancer in my breast it had spread to my lymph node. My team of doctors wanted to be aggressive which meant I had to start chemotherapy immediately. I completed 16 weeks of chemotherapy at the end of February and am preparing for my first of 2 surgeries next Thursday, April 2nd. Once I recover from my surgery, I will begin 6.5 weeks of radiation before my second surgery. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
I’ve learned so many things through my process so far. The biggest of those lessons is gratitude. Be grateful every day. Appreciate and live life to its fullest. I’ve had to learn to slow down, be patient, and make self-care a priority in my life. I’ve had to learn to ask for, and accept, help.
I am beyond grateful for all the thoughts and prayers you have been sending my way up to this point. I want to be an example of hope for other families that must also go through something like this. I want to share my story…you never know whose life you can impact. am deeply touched by any and all support.
